Saturday, February 10, 2007. Enter the rank amateur. Bees have been buzzing around my head, figuratively, for a couple of years now. Before long, I hope, they will be buzzing - literally - around my head (but not too closely). I am about to enter the world of beekeeping. I have been reading a lot about it. I have been attending meetings of the Blount County, Tenn., Beekeepers Association. The beekeepers association is having its annual two-night beekeeping workshop next week, and I will be attending that.

Friday, December 14, 2012. Settling in for winter, waiting to see what happens. The garden is plowed, the cold weather has begun, and the bees are - mostly - in the hives. Cold weather in East Tennessee, of course, doesn't mean what it does in Nebraska or Vermont. We're waking up this December to some heavy frosts, with temps in the upper 20s at best, and then looking forward to early afternoon highs around 55 or 60. So, to lots of folks, this ain't cold.
