During conversation with some of the women attending it was explained to me that Navarathi is to be considered a woman’s festival. Navarathi literally means "nine nights." The festival is observed twice a year, once in the beginning of summer and again at the onset of winter. One prays to Mother Durga to destroy all impurities, vices, defects.
