About Dr. Roberge. About Dr. Roberge. In breast cancer, there is a condition called Axillary Web Syndrome (AWS) or Cording which can occur after a woman or man has had axillary nodes removed. The tightness usually manifests itself within days or weeks of surgery and may be painful and restrictive for arm function. These cords are thought to be sclerosing lymphangions and are unfortunately part of the healing process. They are relieved with manual physical therapy and stretching.
