The View From 6,000 Miles. Friday, October 12, 2007. There are only two things I dislike about my gym. But unfortunately I dislike one of them so much that I'm considering either finding another gym or relooking my exercise options. They insist on having background sound. I hesitate to call it music. It is incredibly intrusive. If I take my own iPod, I can't hear my choice of sound over theirs. I had earplugs made, and while these dampen the noise, they don't block it out entirely. There is another gym o...

The View From 6,000 Miles. Thursday, April 08, 2004. How can a company get so big and so rich by writing truly horrible, malicious software? I'm talking, of course, about Microsoft. They insist they know better than me what I am trying to achieve. And email. Microsoft doesn't want you to know where your email lives. It puts it in the most obscure place possible, and then turns it into a HIDDEN FILE! In the same breath, they advise you to back up often. How? I was trying to find out how to hide the URL on...

The View From 6,000 Miles. Tuesday, March 23, 2004. A terrible thing has happened to me since coming to London. Twice I have been to a genuine gourmet restaurant. The first time, a South African colleague took me to Jamie Oliver's restaurant "15". The second time we planned on having a Christmas meal at a good restaurant called West, only to discover when we got there, it has now become a gourmet restaurant called "East meets West.". These two meals have changed the way I want to serve food. I dont know .

The View From 6,000 Miles. Friday, March 26, 2004. Terrorism is good. Terrorism is great. Long live Terrorism! That's the message the United Nations is sending me loud and clear today. They want to condemn the killing of the leader of a militant terrorist group? A man who has not only masterminded the deaths of thousands of innocent men, women and children, but has brainwashed his own people into strapping bombs onto their bodies to cause these deaths? If it's cool to kill Jews, it's cool to kill anyone.

The View From 6,000 Miles. Sunday, October 21, 2007. Way to go, Bokke! The Dutch hang flags on high days and holidays. Paul ordered flags and flagpoles (of course he would, he's interested in heraldry and stuff like that) so today is definitely a good excuse to use them for the first time. Of course it's bad manners to hang just the South African flag here. That's why the Dutch one is out too. Posted by cyberjanet at 11:14 AM. There are only two things I dislike about my gym. . The View From 6,000 Miles. Saturday, March 06, 2004. Whenever I wonder what the hell I'm doing here, this picture reminds me. They put barbed wire up around my house. It was the last straw. I remember the night before. It was late, dark. A frantic ringing of our doorbell, pleas for help. Three young guys and a dog from the house two doors up. They had been watching television, when one of them spotted three black guys crawling in through one of the bedroom windows. Our home was already a prison. One week...

The View From 6,000 Miles. Saturday, April 03, 2004. I can't believe that I'm nearly fifty and have never learned to dress properly or wear make-up. I tried to buy a new base yesterday. Or is it called foundation? In the local Boots there are at least five brands, each of which has at least five different kinds. And no information about them. I think you're supposed to absorb this stuff by osmosis. Maybe I just need a subscription to Seventeen. Posted by cyberjanet at 10:33 AM. I dont know . Wednesday, J...

The View From 6,000 Miles. Thursday, December 27, 2007. Have you come back to find out how I'm doing on this anti-Heathrow Injection programme? Well, it's been cold here. Snowing in fact. Temperatures outside below freezing, and I've had to go out in that weather, in clothes that aren't quite warm enough. Plus it's the middle of winter. The days are at their shortest and darkest, and the nights are at their longest. This is a surefire recipe for climate-induced weight gain. So far so good. I'm thinking o...
