Paul's Fantastic Workbench!: Playing With Trains by Sam Posey.
http://paulthehalfwit.blogspot.com/2015/08/playing-with-trains-by-sam-posey.html
Confessions of a serial kit builder. Sunday, 2 August 2015. Playing With Trains by Sam Posey. I found this book by chance on Amazon, and thought that it might make good holiday reading. I was right. The book is highly readable, so well written in fact that I finished it in the first two days of my break. My copy came from across the ocean, cost me whole ten pence plus £2.80 postage. 5 August 2015 at 18:27. 9 August 2015 at 11:00. Photo now added, I dont like blog posts without a pic. or two. Spam never g...

Paul's Fantastic Workbench!: February 2015
http://paulthehalfwit.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Confessions of a serial kit builder. Friday, 20 February 2015. Langley OO9 skip wagon. One of the lesser known OO9 kits, I picked this up from Langley's stand at recent exhibition. It appears to be a Hudson Rugga skip wagon, cast in whitemetal, complete with a miner figure;. Judging by the cast curly spoke wheels it looks to be a purely static kit. We'll see about that. Wheels are simply fitted by pushing the frame sides back together! Here's my crude 'D' drill;. As it weighs a hefty 19 grams! Parkside s...

Paul's Fantastic Workbench!: A ride on the Poppy Line.
http://paulthehalfwit.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-ride-on-poppy-line.html
Confessions of a serial kit builder. Sunday, 9 August 2015. A ride on the Poppy Line. What to do when holidaying in North Norfolk and the rest of the family are having afternoon tea? Tea and cake is fine, but afternoon tea sounds rather too formal for my liking.) Simple, find a steam railway and go for a ride. This year it was the turn of the North Norfolk Railway (last year I rode on the Wells and Walsingham. Heading back to Holt I failed to photograph the yard at Weybourne as a young girl stood at the ...

Paul's Fantastic Workbench!: August 2015
http://paulthehalfwit.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Confessions of a serial kit builder. Monday, 17 August 2015. Even more accessories for the Unimat SL. The Unimat SL was designed to turn wood as well as metal with the addition of a few extra parts. A proper swivelling toolrest could be fitted, which meant stripping down the machine and removing the bed bars so that the saddle could be replaced with the hand tool rest. Much simpler though is part 1201, a simple hand tool rest which just bolts onto the saddle in place of the turning tool holder;. So last ...

The track formation before scenery and back drops. I chose an up-to-date theme for the layout, with the option of back dating to the mid 1980s, the transition between BR blue and sector eras. The West Midlands, namely the Grand Junction line is the inspiration for the project which will feature N Brass Locomotives. Baseb...

Paul's Fantastic Workbench!: November 2014
http://paulthehalfwit.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Confessions of a serial kit builder. Saturday, 22 November 2014. 3 slate slab wagons. Slab wagons were used for carrying blocks of quarried slate from the working face to the dressing sheds, and were of simple design. They often ran on double flanged wheels, with the wheels loose on their axles which help when running on poorly laid track that might be out of gauge. Slab wagons could be wooden or made from steel section. A photo of a rake of typical wooden wagons can be seen here. Here they are together;.

Paul's Fantastic Workbench!: January 2015
http://paulthehalfwit.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Confessions of a serial kit builder. Tuesday, 27 January 2015. Antex XS25 element replacement. When I decided in 2008 that I wanted to build etched kits I bought myself an Antex 25w iron. This is one of the best tool purchases that I've made; its light, comfortable to hold, has an good range of tips which are readily obtainable, the element is right at the tip of the iron where its needed, the tips surround the element for better heat transfer, and spares are available. I am not associated with Antex in ...

Paul's Fantastic Workbench!: March 2015
http://paulthehalfwit.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Confessions of a serial kit builder. Sunday, 22 March 2015. Cycling past Peak Forest quarry this morning I noticed a very shiny wagon. So this afternoon I couldn't resist going back armed with a camera. The wagon in question is a HOA hopper, smartly turned out in DB Shenker livery;. The wagon number for those interested is 320013. It contrasts nicely with an EWS liveried HOA behind it;. Just for the sake of balance here's a pair of scruffy JGAs;. And an internationally registered bogie open;. Overlays we...
