Every year, thousands of North Dakotans do not receive regular, routine dental care because there is not enough access to providers in rural areas or for many people with low-incomes in urban centers. In fact, dental care is the most common unmet health need in children. 47% of dentists do not accept Medicaid patients, according to a 2011-12 survey. 70% of children enrolled in Medicaid did not see a dentist in 2013. Despite a gradual increase in the number of dentists over the past few years, North Dakota still does not have enough to provide routine care for our state’s growing population.
