Will Out West: October 2009
http://willoutwest.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, October 31, 2009. Ultra low cost small scale grazing. Greg Carlton, Knox County, Nebraska. Greg Carlton won't mind me saying this, but he has had to work from the bottom up. Having worked on or around farms for years he is now working on getting his own unit up and running. He has improved stocking rates on land that had previously been very denuded, by three fold. He wants to keep his sytem low tech - as you can see by his one significant cost on the left - the bale unroller. Keep it simple an...

John Burleson, Agronomist. 2011 Custom Farming Rates. Ag Fax, Where ag goes for information. Wednesday, July 27, 2011. No cotton insecticide treatments have been made this week. Spotty pix applications have been made. We are thankful for the rainfall we have received in the last two weeks. I feel it will take a lot of (days) steady rain to cause this crop to start growing again. That being said, I'm not concerned about having to deal with a second crop, yet! Wednesday, July 20, 2011. We've used Endigo or...

This is THE limiting factor in our county. Drag, drag, drag! A long term consideration would include reducing field widths to 200-220'. We've had excellent opportunites to do this this fall! 2 Flail mow corn stalks. Confine the rotary mower to field path duty. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Manage volunteer corn, weeds.

John Burleson, Agronomist. 2011 Custom Farming Rates. Ag Fax, Where ag goes for information. Tuesday, June 28, 2011. Cotton Blooming, Insects Quiet. A small percentage of our cotton acres are in the first to second week of bloom. Compared to past seasons, the crop is blooming several weeks earlier. If we could snap our fingers, we'd order up some moisture to push the crop along especially on mineral soils. Nodes above white flower range from 3-5 in these areas. The insect situation continues to suprise m...

John Burleson, Agronomist. 2011 Custom Farming Rates. Ag Fax, Where ag goes for information. Tuesday, October 25, 2011. Wheat Planting Has Begun. If more "normal" conditions prevail this wheat season, intensive management styles will prevail here. Last year was a 1 out of 10 year. Something to think about: Some winners from last years yield contest seeded at less than 120 lbs/a. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Wheat Planting Has Begun.

John Burleson, Agronomist. 2011 Custom Farming Rates. Ag Fax, Where ag goes for information. Sunday, March 20, 2011. Most wheat is now jointing (Feekes 6). Weed control appears to good where herbicides were used. Leaf spotting can be seen where Harmony and nitrogen were used together and this always brings up the question of whether the two should be used together. Opinions differ on this. I say apply them seperately. Friday, March 4, 2011. Cotton: Spring and Summer Herbicide Options. On conventional til...

John Burleson, Agronomist. 2011 Custom Farming Rates. Ag Fax, Where ag goes for information. Friday, May 27, 2011. We haven't had any significant rain fall since April. Corn on our organic soils looks better than our mineral land. Tissue tests have confirmed nitrogen, phosphorous and sulphur deficiencies. Most of these problems would be eliminated with moisture while some will have to be fixed next year. So far aphids are not showing up but I expect them any time with the hot temperatures we are now havi...

John Burleson, Agronomist. 2011 Custom Farming Rates. Ag Fax, Where ag goes for information. Monday, November 28, 2011. Weed Pressure Heavy in Wheat. Weed pressure in wheat is the highest I've seen in several years. Henbit, chickweed and bluegrasss are the predominant weeds and we shouldn't have any problem controlling them. The key is to treat early. Its uncommon to be applying weed control in November but this year it has been the norm. November 21, 2012 at 8:11 PM. John, how are you and the family?

John Burleson, Agronomist. 2011 Custom Farming Rates. Ag Fax, Where ag goes for information. Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Traveling through Mid west! First time I've ever driven out to Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Corn an beans for as far as you can see. Beautiful country. Farming looks worry free out here but I know thats not the case. Appears to be more corn to be harvested than soybeans. Looks like growers will have a couple of good days for harvesting before rain moves in. Weed Pressure Heavy in Wheat.
