Broadcasting from rural Japan. Friday, August 01, 2008. A Farm Boy Reflects. By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF. Published: July 31, 2008. Nicholas D. Kristof. In a world in which animal rights are gaining ground, barbecue season should make me feel guilty. My hunch is that in a century or two, our descendants will look back on our factory farms with uncomprehending revulsion. But in the meantime, I love a good burger. I’m a farm boy who grew up here in the hills outside Yamhill, Ore., raising sheep for my...Our cat...

Broadcasting from rural Japan. Wednesday, September 17, 2008. 17,000 an Hour. No Success Required. By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF. Published: September 17, 2008. Are you capable of taking a perfectly good 158-year-old company and turning it into dust? If so, then you may not be earning up to your full potential. You should be raking it in like Richard Fuld, the longtime chief of Lehman Brothers. He took home nearly half-a-billion dollars in total compensation between 1993 and 2007. This isn’t a plaque that...

Conrad/The New York Times. Nicholas D. Kristof. Is genocide really that bad? Genocide is regrettable, but don’t lose perspective. It is simply one of many tragedies in the world today — and a fairly modest one in terms of lives lost. Civil conflict in Congo has claimed more than 5.4 million lives over the last decade, accor...

Broadcasting from rural Japan. Sunday, October 14, 2007. Picture of the Day: On the Trail. Book Review: Three Cups of Tea. I'm here sick in bed at home, and rather than only wipe snot out of my nose every minute (which is, admittedly, fun) I thought it would be a good idea to write a review of a fabulous book I just read, a book I must insist that everyone I know read. I cannot recommend this book enough. You can pick up a copy on Amazon.com for only $8.99. It will thrill you, make you sm...Picture of th...

Lost in Translation: November 2007

Broadcasting from rural Japan. Friday, November 30, 2007. Looking across Lake Biwa from the Eastern shore. Hong and I drove north and west to Fukui Prefecture on the Japan Sea coast last weekend, and along the way we stopped to take in the beauty of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan.
