Nicaragua Journey

Thursday, July 12, 2012. Monday evening—three days ago- we hosted a party to thank people who had worked for the Gateway to Hope Garden Tour, which funds arts camps for Nicaraguan children. It was the eve of our departure for Nicaragua, and my environmental conscience was in hyper-vigilant. Instead of disposables, I provided glass bowls and metal spoons. When guests unwrapped their ice cream, we saved the Styrofoam sheets. Then, the final test: what to do with the Ziplocs? Fast forward to our Nicaraguan ...

Nicaragua Journey: January 2010

http://nicaraguajourney.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 31, 2010. 8220;After great pain,. At Casita Memorial Park, north of Leon, Ebelina tells her story. In 1998 she lived in El Porvenir, a village on the side of this volcanic mountain. Several days of torrential rains had followed Hurricane Mitch. Then on October 30, she heard a loud rumble and ran outside to look for the helicopter. Instead she saw a roaring wall of mud. It surged through El Porvenir, burying her waist-deep, crushing three ribs, and breaking her cheekbones. 8221; we ask.

Nicaragua Journey: February 2011

Saturday, February 26, 2011. Pella: Friday After Midnight. The van hums as we exit Highway 163 onto Washington Street. Looking at the Pella tundra, Marlo says, “In Nicaragua, you can be poor and survive, but not in Pella.”. Through the flurries, Wal-Mart’s windows beckon across a deserted parking lot. Remembering our empty refrigerator, we turn in. 8220;Yes,” the wan clerk says. “We are still open- 24-7, 7 days a week.”. Thursday, February 24, 2011. Nicaragua Journey: Spanish—and Judgment—at a Phoenix Resort

Saturday, March 10, 2012. Spanish—and Judgment—at a Phoenix Resort. Our first day of an Arizona getaway, at noon, we were sick abed with flu. A maid knocked. Marlo staggered to the door. I listened from the bed. 8220; Habla Ingles? Do you speak English? 8221; he asked the maid. 8220; Solo Español. Only Spanish)” she answered. He croaked out a few Spanish sentences. 8220; Estamos enfermo. S (We are sick)”. 8220; No necessita limpiar el cuarto. You don’t need to clean the room.)”. God wired me to enjoy wri...

In the Garden: Sacred Rhythm

http://cvkgarden.blogspot.com/2012/05/sacred-rhythm.html

Monday, May 7, 2012. I woke this morning with a nature deficit disorder. After four days deprived, I was restless for my gardens. Thursday through Saturday, at Pella’s downtown Molengracht, I sat in a white vendor tent under a slice of sky with bricks beside and below. Our tent perched among others along the sides of an artificial canal with bright blue cement beside and below its water. A sign warned not wade in the water. It was chemically treated. Sunday, I slept. And I feel deeply her invitation.

In the Garden: Too Much Fun

http://cvkgarden.blogspot.com/2012/04/too-much-fun.html

Monday, April 23, 2012. For three days, surrounded by 2000 other word-lovers, I drank words. By day two, in fact, I was dizzy with them. I informed Facebook friends, that Calvin’s Festival of Faith and Writing was almost too much fun. Yesterday, on the trip home, I eased my withdrawal by listening to Marilyn Robinson’s novel, Housekeeping,. Downloaded to my smartphone for me by my Michigan sister. The book had more miles than the highways. Then the infant Creeping Jenny under mailbox,. Subscribe to: Post...

In the Garden: Sudden Freeze

http://cvkgarden.blogspot.com/2012/04/sudden-freeze.html

Monday, April 23, 2012. This year, Iowa spring came early. Daffodils, then tulips, bloomed in March. I potted tropicannas and morning glories. The bulbs sprang giant leaves,. The seeds shot shoots. Last night frost fell,. Invading even their plastic dome. The morning glories are shriveled to nothing. The canna leaves dangle. I trim limp leaves. And wonder if the stalks. I do not know. In the garden I never know. I plant, I prune, I watch. In a cloud of unknowing. This morning as I snip,.

News and Events About a Bridge Across Countries and Cultures. News and Views Archives. Laquo; Pella-Area Garden Tour Opens Today. At a Baptismal Pool. Posted July 12, 2016 by carolvanklompenburg in Uncategorized. It is a hot and humid Sunday morning in Chinandega. We crowd into an old school bus, three people per seat, with additional riders standing in the aisles. Packed overhead are satchels and bags with towels, swimwear and food. A picnic follows under the palm-leaf covered shelters bordering the pool.

In the Garden: June 2008

http://cvkgarden.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 30, 2008. For years I have hated the chipmunks who inhabited my yard. They dug under backyard perennials. They deposited dirt on my front yard rockscaping. So for years I fumed helplessly at them. I didn’t have a dog, but I told Gary I could substitute a shovel, and whack the chipmunk when it surfaced. I didn’t follow through. The thought of blood oozing around a stripe stopped me. I began to picture the Skunk river bank as the site of a vast celebration—a clan of chipmunks rejoicing t...

In the Garden: July 2011

http://cvkgarden.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 24, 2011. Sunday noon it rains, a straight-down no-thunder rain for fifteen minutes. When it stops, I spray on sunscreen, don hat, socks, and boots, and head to the garden. Amid an earth-scorching heat wave, I haven’t gardened for two weeks. Last week, sun-deprived, I found a skylight in the air-conditioned Central College student lounge and soaked in sun. To keep or not to keep the false oregano? The barrow full, I wheel to the compost area, dump the contents, and start weeding the edge of ...

In the Garden: Double Vision

http://cvkgarden.blogspot.com/2012/04/double-vision.html

Thursday, April 26, 2012. I garden this morning along a Pella country road. I prune branches from the Cotoneaster, then pot one of its twigs that has sprouted roots where it touched soil. I uproot pigweed, dandelions, and miscellaneous grasses, sometimes wedging the digger beneath them to push roots from below as I pull stems above. Sometimes I simply pull the stems and hope. She advised us, “Read John Calvin. Read him twice.”. Shamefaced, she—whose English major has far fewer miles than mine- conf...
