Black eyes and Marriage. Wednesday, June 29, 2011. This is the face I came home to last week! A goose-egg the size of a bouncy ball and 2 black eyes. What happened? Apparently, Van and Ava were playing. Van was launching a surprise attack with his toy rifle on his giant stuffed dog, named Big Bolt. As he swung the butt-stock of the gun around to catch the stuffed animal by surprise, Ava launched her own impromtu attack. She received the blow instead of Big Bolt! Wednesday, June 29, 2011. Nielson Family Adventures: January 2011

http://www.nielsonfamilyadventures.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 27, 2011. Thursday, January 27, 2011. Links to this post. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. The tubing "hill" was more of a tubing run. there was one path that had raised walls, but again, the path down was compacted snow, borderline ice. When we got to the hill, Van was off! I lifted my feet and we were off! About half way down the hill our tube spun us so that we were going down the hill backward. Even then, the smile remained! All the tough Marines! Going up the Mountain! Jared will join ...

Nielson Family Adventures: February 2011

http://www.nielsonfamilyadventures.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Thursday, February 24, 2011. Yes, lets make the house colder, to the point we are chilled, then put on socks and a sweater, and THAT will make it so that we don't get sick. Thursday, February 24, 2011. Links to this post. Monday, February 14, 2011. Monday, February 14, 2011. Links to this post. Thursday, February 10, 2011. The other day I was walking by the fruit store that I pass everyday on my way to get Ava from pre-school. Out of the corner of my eye I saw something green. I stopped in my tra...No on...

No Rank Among Wives. Sunday, June 27, 2010. Me and my Gardener - wife of Lieutenant Colonel McCullough. Then I visited Jen's garden. It was beautiful. My hope of a lush and fertile garden was reborn. We spent 5 hours hacking, pulling and pruning the flora and fauna. By this time the kids were completely covered in mud, and hungry. We stripped off their clothes, hosed them down and took them inside for a warm bath. Afterward we had oven baked smores and went out for dinner. Jen, working her magic! This is...

Nielson Family Adventures: Jedi Training Camp

http://www.nielsonfamilyadventures.blogspot.com/2011/06/jedi-training-camp.html

Monday, June 06, 2011. Van's Birthday was so much fun! Van has been loving Star Wars as of late, so the theme for his party seemed an obvious choice. I was pretty impressed with the way his R2-D2 cake turned out. Used 6 layered caked for the Body, and the dome and legs were constructed out of Rice Krispy treats. Jared and Jason also helped decorate and assemble the assorted peices. The Pinata was a major hit with all the kids! Monday, June 06, 2011. So much fun for all the boys, big or little! Sponsored ...

Tilted Glass: January 2010

http://tiltedglass.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 18, 2010. Banana Bread for Kids of All Ages. In the past, I've done a variety of banana bread recipes with or without nuts of all kinds. I've made banana muffins, peanut butter banana bread, Amish banana cake and many many banana yogurt smoothies. I adore banana breads both fresh and toasted. Is there anything more delightful than toasted banana bread with cream cheese or butter? And chia seeds I had bought a few months ago on a fit of health after reading about them in a running book&#46...

Tilted Glass: November 2009

http://tiltedglass.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 18, 2009. Eating on the Cheap. Of course, Pollan and other food researchers have discussed the total cost of all that prepared, processed food and fast food- think government subsidies and poor health costs. This weekend we bought bok choy at a Chinese food market- tender, green, sandy-as-could-be bok choy. Price: a ridiculous $2. At a local supermarket the same bok choy would have cost me three times as much. I don't know why- supply/demand volume? In a medium stock pot, melt the but...

Tilted Glass: Off we go, into the wild blue yonder...

http://tiltedglass.blogspot.com/2010/06/off-we-gointo-wild-blue-yonder.html

Friday, June 11, 2010. Off we go, into the wild blue yonder. I love living in our nation's capitol. There's always something going on, something to do, and most of them are FREE! The US Air Force Band plays at the Air Force Memorial every Wednesday and Friday night from June through August. Since Heatherly was working, the girls and I took some chairs, a blanket, some bubbles and camped out under the clear, blue sky on a spectacular night with warm breezes and great music. On the Road to Burma.

Tilted Glass: So much, so little

http://tiltedglass.blogspot.com/2010/07/so-much-so-little.html

Thursday, July 8, 2010. So much, so little. All that we need for the next six weeks is in a closet. Everything else has been wrapped, boxed, padded and lugged down the crazy town home stairs and then packed into crates- most headed for a three-year storage and a few to meet us in Rangoon later. Take them away again, please, before I figure out how to squeeze them into our ridiculous luggage count. Stow and go, I say. Glad you guys had the boat trip before heading to Burma. Tilted Glass: April 2010

http://tiltedglass.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 11, 2010. The aquarium at the Baltimore Inner Harbor was the first choice but a quick check online showed sold-out conditions on that attraction. So, I opted for a trip out to Front Royal, VA and the Skyline Caverns. Today is another beautiful day. Maybe we'll take the girls to the park and climb some trees and then go for ice cream. Simple. My new motto: ride dinosaurs. Monday, April 5, 2010. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). On the Road to Burma. The doc is out there. Out There On The Dunes.

Tilted Glass: March 2010

http://tiltedglass.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 29, 2010. Spring blasted in on us with a week of sun and warmth and then crept back to its more normal rainy self this week. The rain suits me today as we enter Passion Week before Resurrection Sunday. I grew up saying "Easter," but my short trip to Uganda taught me this new term: Resurrection Sunday. Is this Resurrection Sunday? No, Palm Sunday.". Easter, for those who want to know, comes from Middle English which itself comes from Old English and then goes back to Germanic Ostern. 1/2 cup...

Tilted Glass: May 2010

http://tiltedglass.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 16, 2010. Memory is a child walking along a seashore. You never can tell what small pebble it will pick up and store away among its treasured things. The girls and I had a father-daughter weekend. This wasn't planned; we'd signed up for the. Flat, back country roads, little traffic, bicyclists everywhere, sunshine and cool breezes, puddles to blaze through and splash ourselves and each other. The girls chattered endlessly about nothing the music of their silly laughter carrying us down th...

Friday, February 5, 2010. Igloo in the Road. I get this question a lot. In fact, I can almost bet it's the second or third question when someone finds out we're going to Burma, kids and all. It's not always exactly the same, but it invariably is accompanied by the raised eyebrow, the not-so-subtle body language that says "Really? Aren't you worried about the girls? Last weekend the girls and I played out in the snow for a couple of hours. MeiLin. Spent most of her time sitting in the igloo while MeiLin.

Tilted Glass: June 2011

http://tiltedglass.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 12, 2011. No, I don't drink coffee. I sort of like coffee now. Before my sister starts to do a dance in the barista area of her favorite independent coffee shop, I need to explain. I still don't drink coffee. I find the taste of coffee bitter. Or, I should say, I now find. The taste of coffee by itself bitter. This week, I have learned something new - coffee WITH quality chocolate wrapped in something else (like a coffeecake, perhaps) doesn't taste bitter. In fact, it tastes amazing. That's ...

April 14, 2014. Things That Made Me Smile Today. A routine Monday at home means lots of cleaning and planning/strategizing for the week. It also means lots of time and conversation with the littlest Nielsons. In which they say all kinds of things that make me smile. In regards to our local historical museum being closed on Monday, my two year old may say:. Jesus is opening the museum so we can go pet the baby sheep because they are SOOOO cute! MOM, watch me hip-scotch! January 17, 2014. January 14, 2014.

Nielson Family Party

Thursday, August 6, 2009. So I just have to brag a little. The house looks A LOT LIKE A HOUSE! We're planning for the 4-way inspection Wednesday or Thursday, then we could use some help running low voltage wire and putting up insulation in the garage and master bedroom. Anyone up for a party? Monday, July 20, 2009. HOLY FAST CONSTRUCTION BATMAN! How excited are you guys about THIS HOUSE? I stole this pic off Cheryl's blog. But seriously, go check out the creation of a what is quickly becoming a home!
