Friday, 29 May 2015. On the 22nd May 1915 the worst rail disaster in the UK occurred at Quintinshill near Gretna Green, Scotland. The collision that occurred and the subsequent fire resulted in over 220 killed and 240 injured. The Volunteer Force was a citizen army of part-time rifle, artillery and engineer corps, created as a popular movement in 1859. Originally highly autonomous, the units of volunteers became increasingly integrated with the British Army, before forming part of the Territorial Force in 1908.
