I think things, and here they are. Danger. Danger. Run. Your legs are frozen stilts beneath your hips. Lungs expand in, out, in, out, harder, harder, faster, it hurts to inhale the frigid air but–. You have no choice. Danger. Faster. Run. A twinge. Don’t stop to look. Vision going blurry. Eyelashes stuck together. Blink, furiously. Swallow. Choke. Neck is frozen, muscles too cold to respond. Coughing. Stop, don’t, stay quiet. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. Movement. On the right. Your body to shut up.

As the soft golden sun set over a snow-covered river valley, I found myself kicking off snowbanks, testing the ice on the river, and stopping to hear nothing but my own heart beating in my chest and the breath flowing in and out of my lungs. I think things, and here they are. Lessons exist in everything we do. The idea that each and every thing that occurs in our lives is random and unpredictable doesn’t make any sense to me. As humans, we consistently wreak havoc on the world in which we live. We destroy beauty and permanence to create utility. But we have never been destructive enough to change the fundamental aspect of our world, which is supported by both physics and yours truly: cause and effect. Hello, this is the optimist speaking.
