For the genre study in the Writing Camp today, we looked at Flash Fiction, an ill-defined genre in terms of how long it needs to be, but somewhere between six words and three-hundred. Here’s a go at a story. Poindexter stopped at the door, turned, and took a last look. The place seemed more pristine now than when he arrived four years ago to start grad school. What bothered me most, though, about the story was the idea that after firing these trained professionals, the school hoped to hire new teachers from “Teach for America.”. To repopulate the school staff with untrained novice teachers is asking, I think, for continued disaster. More importantly, calling on mostly TfA teachers with seriously deficient training appears to be more of a cost-cutting effort than a genuine concern for the students.
