Bees are so confusing if only I knew an expert, late yesterday evening in the garden was this individual very frustrating - on the face of it its definitely a male social Buff-tailed Bumblebee because: black facial hair, single yellow stripe on thorax and abdomen, tail dirty white to buff, shiny flat and broad tibia, very hairy making it look furry! Rarely do patchwork birders get ornithological rewards in return for all the hours of walks through familiar trails in search of something out of the ordinary. But today it happened to me as a distant and dumpy Hawfinch decided to sit on top of a tall Spruce like a Tinsel star on a Christmas tree, giving me time to slowly correct my mistake that the bird was initially a Crossbill!
