Dragonfly Hunting in Northamptonshire and The Soke of Peterborough
Northamptonshire Dragonflies: November 2014
http://northantsdragonflies.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Dragonfly Hunting in Northamptonshire and The Soke of Peterborough. Sunday, 2 November 2014. The last month of the dragonfly season in Northants, is now upon us, and started with 6 Common Darters. Recorded at Ditchford on the 1st. I had hoped to find at least one Migrant Hawker but despite reasonable weather conditions they failed to show. Terry and Judy Wood saw one at Barnwell Country Park on 31 Oct so I expect some are still around, waiting to be seen. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Hits since May 2008.

Dragonfly Hunting in Northamptonshire and The Soke of Peterborough. Monday, 8 June 2015. Black-tailed Skimmers, thousands of Common Blues and Scarce Chasers. I took a break from the Sunday ironing and popped across the road to Stanwick Lakes. The ponds and pits around the Visitor Centre are great places for Black-tailed Skimmers, so I hoped to find a few emerging. Walking clockwise around the large gravel pit, close to the water, I must have disturbed over 2000 emergent Common Blue Damselflies. Species R...

Dragonflies and Damselflies: Odonata
http://dragonflies-and-damselflies.blogspot.com/2009/06/odonata.html
A blog dedicated to all things Odonata,. Written by an ecologist and dragonfly-enthusiast. Based in the United Kingdom. Libellula fulva . Monday, 22 June 2009. Entomologists have been puzzled as to why Fabricius chose the name Odonata for the dragonflies and damselflies since the mandibles of most insects are toothed and a name indicating "toothed mandibles" is no more significant for dragonflies than it would be for beetles or grasshoppers. For more information on the name Odonata see the article.

Northants Diptera
Diptera are the true, or two-winged flies. They are a sadly neglected group but with over 7000 species in the UK, there are plenty of opportunities to study and record them. Friday, 2 December 2016. Another new Cranefly for Northants. In mid-September I was sweeping under some willows next to a dried up pond in a former sand pit near Yardley Hastings when I took a small insignificant-looking cranefly. Back at home I keyed it out as a male Ormosia bicornis. The specimen now resides in the NHM's collection.
