Included hatch-year Yellow Warblers, with pristine and bright feathers. Juvenile Swamp Sparrows were captured also, looking a lot like Lincoln's Sparrow. But note that the buffy malar is not bordered with dark on both sides, as it is in Lincoln's, and the crown is generally darker. Hatch-year male Brown-headed Cowbird. Highlights of the 119 birds banded on Thursday, August 7.

Michigan Hummingbird Guy: December 2014
http://mihummingbirdguy.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Friday, December 26, 2014. Off on a wild goose chase. With the 2014 songbird banding season over, and the late fall hummingbird banding season cut short by a lack of birds, we had some spare time on our hands in December. And, with very low gas prices, and a car that gets 50 mpg, we decided to get away for a few days. But where? Near Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. Canada Geese near Hightstown, New Jersey. Thank you John, and our new friend from Toronto, for being the sacrificial birders! At the northern end...

Michigan Hummingbird Guy: Summer Hummingbirds and other things
http://mihummingbirdguy.blogspot.com/2015/07/summer-hummingbirds-and-other-things.html
Friday, July 17, 2015. Summer Hummingbirds and other things. Hatch-year female Ruby-throated Hummingbird. Summer is also the season of bugs (insects), but it has been surprising so far how few mosquitos and deer flies there have been, considering how wet and rainy it has been. Perhaps the cool conditions (we have not had a 90 degree day yet) have been keeping their numbers down? And finally, an interesting beetle was presented to me at a home where I was banding hummingbirds. It was a species I was n...

Cerulean Sky: January 2013

Wednesday, January 30, 2013. The Dove and the Olive Branch. Now that I am working again, I accept that I won't be able to chase every rarity that gets reported in Ontario like I did most of last year. I'm grateful to be employed again (w/ a job I'm enjoying no less! Well, as things sometimes do, things instantly went wrong. Or José Saramago's Blindness. When I lived in Toronto I would always wear the opposite of what the weather called for (which I hadn't checked anyway). Mark Field can attest. Can we go...

Cerulean Sky: WEPBirds
http://ceruleansky15.blogspot.com/2013/11/wepbirds.html
Tuesday, November 12, 2013. So check it out: there's a cool new message board/website that Kory Renaud just developed called WEPBirds. The URL is www.wepbirds.com. When it comes down to it though, WEPBirds is just a good place for like-minded folks, you know, people interested in birds who are awesome, to connect. Because let's face it, nonbirders are wonderful people but sometimes you just want to be all about birds and it's hard to talk birding w/ someone whose eyes glaze over at the mere mention o...

Sunday, January 05, 2014. The Great Thick-billed Murre Chase. Like many good birding adventures, this one started with an Ontbirds post and alcohol. Jeremy was at Mark's apartment and someone had reported a Thick-billed Murre at a downtown harbour in Kingston. This was one of few modern records for the species; a mega-rarity. And it sounded reliable. Reading the post, they poured another rum and coke, liberal on the rum, conservative on the coke. So, what do you think? Shit," Mark said. Here's the plan&#...

Monday, December 31, 2012. Ontario Big Year: #305 - Purple Sandpiper. It's been a great year of birding for me in Ontario. Of course, I want to do a few summary posts of my year in the near future but this post will just be about my last new year bird of 2012: Purple Sandpiper. A fireplace. A chair. A window. A coffee. A book. With my luck,' I thought, 'I'll run into a ride program.'. Police Officer, "Have you had anything to drink today? Me: "OUT OF MY WAY, I'M TRYING TO GET TO A PURPLE SANDPIPER! Polic...
