Harney County – Memorial Day Weekend | Oregon Field Notes
https://oregonfieldnotes.wordpress.com/2013/08/15/harney-county-memorial-day-weekend
Birding Afield in Oregon. Harney County – Memorial Day Weekend. August 15, 2013. I spent the equivalent of three full days in late May at two sites in Harney Co…. Part 1 – Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The legendary Malheur NWR is hands-down the best overall birding spot in the Pacific Northwest. It is roughly 30 miles south of Burns, sandwiched between two large lakes on the north and the town of Frenchglen on the south end. (See map. Warbling Vireo (abundant at HQ). A blurry Lazuli Bunting. Birding Afield in Oregon. October 7, 2015. I’m too busy to put together a proper post right now, but wanted to append a couple of photos that I forgot to include in previous posts. The Hooded Merganser photo above was taken in December of 2013 and apparently slipped through the cracks. Hooded Mergansers are easily my favorite duck. So elegant. OK, that’s it for now. Later this month, I’ll have a more thorough post of sightings from this year. 2015 Coastal Excursions →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
Florence in Fall | Oregon Field Notes
https://oregonfieldnotes.wordpress.com/2013/11/24/florence-in-fall
Birding Afield in Oregon. November 24, 2013. While middle-to-late summer is the peak of shorebird migration, late September through November offers the opportunity to see both some of the later-migrating shorebirds and migrant ducks. I took a few trips to the Florence area to take advantage of this and was rewarded handsomely. Marbled Godwit, an uncommon fall migrant, but typically easier to find than Pectoral Sandpiper. Bufflehead, a regular winter migrant. This immature Eared Grebe was a bit of a surpr...

Birding Afield in Oregon. The Oregon Outback – September, 2013. September 29, 2013. While the “high desert” label might seem to imply an inhospitable environment for wildlife, this area is teeming with birds and is a great place to catch fall migrants. This September, I visited migrant traps in Harney and Lake Counties. Part 1 – Malheur NWR. Famous for its spring migration. Migrant Yellow Warblers were making their way through Malheur when I visited in mid-September. All of the hummingbirds that breed in...

Birding Afield in Oregon. November 13, 2015. I made it out to the coast a handful of times this year. Not as many as I would’ve liked, as real life always imposes limitations. But you do what you can, when you can, and you’ll likely be rewarded with a few interesting things. A Common Ground-Dove in Yachats. In its more common position on the ground. One of many Sanderlings on the foggy, rainy beach. Elegant (smaller, left) and Caspian Terns. Caspian and Common (smaller) Terns. February 1, 2016 at 8:03 pm.

Garden Grumbles and Cross Stitch Fumbles: Hot Hot Hot
http://gardengrumblesandcrossstitchfumbles.blogspot.com/2015/08/hot-hot-hot.html
GARDEN GRUMBLES and CROSS STITCH FUMBLES and BIRDING BUMBLES. Sunday, August 2, 2015. Everyone has been pretty quiet with the heat we've had lately. 105f on Thursday, 103f on Friday, and 99f on Saturday. It makes morning and afternoon siesta almost required. The other critters feel the same and are only out and about in the early morning. Or the late evening. As usual there are more Rufous Hummers than Anna's. They all like my Salvias.pink ones. Yep purple ones are. Well so are Pink Things! Beautiful hum...

Garden Grumbles and Cross Stitch Fumbles: November 2014
http://gardengrumblesandcrossstitchfumbles.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
GARDEN GRUMBLES and CROSS STITCH FUMBLES and BIRDING BUMBLES. Sunday, November 30, 2014. This group of four deer comes by almost every morning. It is composed of this year's twins (both boys), last year's fawn (a female), and the doe / mother who rules the group. The two females bicker a bit, otherwise they are pretty harmonious. I attempt to wait until they've moseyed on before setting out food for my ground-feeding birds. Otherwise the deer gobble up everything before the birds even have a chance.

Garden Grumbles and Cross Stitch Fumbles: July's Trail Camera Photos
http://gardengrumblesandcrossstitchfumbles.blogspot.com/2015/08/julys-trail-camera-photos.html
GARDEN GRUMBLES and CROSS STITCH FUMBLES and BIRDING BUMBLES. Saturday, August 8, 2015. July's Trail Camera Photos. July was hot and dry. The green grass and shade near Dorothy's Creek proved popular. As often happens we had lots of deer. Sadly, later in the month our Unicorn (right) was struck and killed by car near my sister's Dahlia Garden. With the seasonal creeks mostly dry our galvanized water trough was in continual use. Besides the deer, we had a good mix of 'others' including a Steller's Jay.

GARDEN GRUMBLES and CROSS STITCH FUMBLES and BIRDING BUMBLES. Sunday, May 31, 2015. We've all been enjoying the warmer weather. But being cats. yawn. A nap is always in the works. The deer having nothing against a morning nap. Mama does keep an eye on things. Yep, we're looking at you! The fawn chews his cud. Then he settles down for a nap. I don't think Hummingbirds nap. My Rufous male seem always to be on patrol. The male Anna's sneaks a drink in Rufous Territory! Links to this post. Links to this post.

GARDEN GRUMBLES and CROSS STITCH FUMBLES and BIRDING BUMBLES. Saturday, February 28, 2015. I did put out a few items to celebrate Valentine's Day. I got these three tin buckets as a gift. I wish I'd taken a photo of the lovely yellow and red tulip bouquet. I have some fabric hearts. Glass hearts and tins. Here's the display with a couple of Emma Bridgewater heart items on the far right. What are these three looking at? They're looking at these. Yep we had six of them strolling around. Garden Grumbles and Cross Stitch Fumbles: April 2015
http://gardengrumblesandcrossstitchfumbles.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
GARDEN GRUMBLES and CROSS STITCH FUMBLES and BIRDING BUMBLES. Thursday, April 30, 2015. Before April ends I think I'll tackle one more Easter stitch. I pulled out two different variegated threads - I'm thinking the one on the left will win out. A few days ago a large flock of Evening Grosbeaks swooped in "Chrring" away noisily. The guys are so bright and cheerful. It turned out to be the perfect time to try out my newest feeder. The dome feeder on the left is new and the Grosbeaks appear fine with it.
