Joseph Sanger: Depicting The Light From Distant Stars
http://www.josephsanger.com/2013/10/depicting-light-from-distant-stars.html
Musical experiments and oddities. Saturday, 5 October 2013. Depicting The Light From Distant Stars. In the summer, I visited the Miro Foundation. In Barcelona. It's a wonderful place, and it was really the first time I've fully enjoyed an art exhibition in it's entirety since leaving art school in the 90's. Previously I'd only seen Miro's art in reproductions. Seeing so much work displayed in such an interesting space helped me to appreciate it on a much deeper level. Who wrote a 45-minute solo shakuhach...

Joseph Sanger: A Composers' Guide To The Shakuhachi (part 1)
http://www.josephsanger.com/2014/04/a-composers-guide-to-shakuhachi-part-1.html
Musical experiments and oddities. Wednesday, 2 April 2014. A Composers' Guide To The Shakuhachi (part 1). Recently, a composer friend of mine told me that he would be interested in composing for the shakuhachi. As it is an instrument which is both idiosyncratic and esoteric I thought I would try to write a small guide. This is not intended for those beginning to play the shakuhachi (to whom I would say "try and find a good teacher! The bottom of the shakuhachi, and four of the five fingerholes. The dynam...

Joseph Sanger: Thoughts On Being A Shihan
http://www.josephsanger.com/2014/03/thoughts-on-being-shihan.html
Musical experiments and oddities. Thursday, 27 March 2014. Thoughts On Being A Shihan. Today, my shakuhachi teacher presented me with a "shihan" license. Shihan can be translated as "teacher", "instructor" or "master". Perhaps most importantly, the idea of "mastering" any of the honkyoku - even the most superficially simple of them - now seems irrelevant. There is no end point. The aim is simply to play to one's best ability, and gradually improve. There is always a great deal of room for imp...Tone) wit...

Joseph Sanger: Experimental PVC Shakuhachi Part 2
http://www.josephsanger.com/2013/03/experimental-pvc-shakuhachi-part-2.html
Musical experiments and oddities. Monday, 25 March 2013. Experimental PVC Shakuhachi Part 2. It's the very next day after my previous blog, which is certainly a personal best for me. I've actually managed to pretty much make the whole shakuhachi today so I'm feeling rather pleased with myself. Materials used:. 1m PVC pipe (25mm dia) - the outer shell of the shakuhachi. 1m PVC pipe (20mm dia) - the insert to mimic the tapered bore. 1 pipe connector (25mm) - to form the mouthpiece. Then I put some stickers...

Joseph Sanger: Hibaku Piano
http://www.josephsanger.com/2013/05/hibaku-piano.html
Musical experiments and oddities. Tuesday, 28 May 2013. On Sunday, my family and I went for a walk in Yuki, a rural area quite close to Hiroshima city. We came across a small open-air concert in a field. It was a charity concert run by Peace Hiroshima. All the performers played the Hibaku Piano (or Survivor Piano), one of only four pianos which survived the atomic bomb blast in Hiroshima. The piano has now become a symbol of peace, and travels all over the world. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Joseph Sanger: Kyoto Epiphany
http://www.josephsanger.com/2015/04/kyoto-epiphany.html
Musical experiments and oddities. Wednesday, 8 April 2015. As we wandered back to our hotel through a maze of back streets, I became aware of the sound of a shakuhachi emanating from an upstairs window. I stood and listened for a few minutes. I was unable to see the player, and I didn't feel I could knock and enter. The playing was masterful. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Picture Window template. Powered by Blogger.

Joseph Sanger: Experimental PVC Shakuhachi Part 1
http://www.josephsanger.com/2013/03/shakuhachi-diary-5.html
Musical experiments and oddities. Sunday, 24 March 2013. Experimental PVC Shakuhachi Part 1. It's been a while since I made a musical instrument, and I woke up today with a sudden urge to do so. If you are one of the three or four regular readers of this blog then it will be no surprise to you that I decided to make another shakuhachi. Why? Well, aside from the fact that you can never have too many, I've had an idea knocking around for a few months that I've been wanting to test out. Well, yes I did, but...
