The Dunsel Line: March in Review
http://dunselline.blogspot.com/2015/03/march-in-review.html
Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Let’s get straight to the point; I spent a lot. Of money this month. Even though I’d planned on spending a good deal of money on models this month, my actual total greatly exceeds my anticipation (and this doesn’t even cover routine things like food and bills). I had a number of other projects (not model related) that also cost more than expected, so April will almost certainly be a very quiet month around here. I probably won’t begin this phase of that project in April. After th...

The Dunsel Line: Dagwood and the Embankment
http://dunselline.blogspot.com/2015/05/dagwood-and-embankment.html
Thursday, May 14, 2015. Dagwood and the Embankment. In Edgewater with the backs of apartment buildings and the briefest of glimpses into the lives of the people who lived there. In my mind’s eye, this was what I would build. The neighborhood seemed “right.” Yet the two concepts of this thing I was to build clashed. The thing I was planning to constructing didn’t match the thing that my future self had already built. I was aware of the conflict but disregarded it. Unfortunately, when I finally rolled out ...

The Dunsel Line: December 2014
http://dunselline.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Friday, December 26, 2014. So, after pulling my hair out trying to find this separate piece, I gave up and decided to reduce the thickness of the "finished floor" by 1mm just to see how much money this would knock off the total price. It turns out 1mm translates out to about an $18 savings. More importantly, though, the product no longer registered as having "thin walls" or multiple parts! Either way, I have no solution at present. Labels: .dae files. Wednesday, December 24, 2014. There are holes or redu...

The Dunsel Line: The Visit to the Museum
http://dunselline.blogspot.com/2014/10/the-visit-to-museum.html
Tuesday, October 7, 2014. The Visit to the Museum. No, this isn't a thesis on the short story by Vladimir Nabokov. (Which is a great story by the way. You should read it.) On Sunday I went out to the Illinois Railway Museum. The purpose was to take measurements on the underbody equipment of the 2400-series. L" cars, the bodies of the 2200-series. L" cars, the body of the CA&E 400-series. And spirited away to some unknown location. I later found the cars, but as I am not eleven feet tall, the lack of ...

The Dunsel Line: June 2015
http://dunselline.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Wednesday, June 24, 2015. These are NorthWest Short Line. Magic Carpet IIIs installed in Q Car. Baldwin 8430AA sideframes. I opted not to get the sideframes with North Shore trolley beams so that I could devise and 3D print my own. Trolley beams with free hanging third rail shoes. If this fails, I'll acquire the appropriate Q Car trolley beams and attach them myself. While I did take the opportunity to ride some trains, I was primarily there to complete and expand the measurements I took back in October.

The Dunsel Line: August 2015
http://dunselline.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Friday, August 14, 2015. Pantographs and Trolley Beams. It’s a long one. Since May I’ve made some headway on a number of projects. 3D modeling continues as always and on July 9, I received the first print of the experimental roof walks for the 3200 series cars. The walks in question are only the rear half, the portion that is only half-width. This was done as a cost saving measure for the test article. The fact that I can smell it really attests to the strength of the smell.). Tying in with the roof boar...

The Dunsel Line: April on the Dunsel Line
http://dunselline.blogspot.com/2015/05/april-on-dunsel-line.html
Thursday, May 7, 2015. April on the Dunsel Line. As predicted, April was a slow one on the Dunsel Line. There were no new purchases even though some were available. A pair of CA&E 450s was out there, but I passed these up. It’s just as well. I’ve already got two North Shore trains to work on in addition to the Skokie Swift pieces. Makes sense to at least try to finish some of this stuff, right? Speaking of the snowplows, I have made a discovery: they’re too wide! How frustrating. The angled bars at t...

The Dunsel Line: October 2014
http://dunselline.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Wednesday, October 8, 2014. Time to Slow Down? I try to keep my eyes open for another 1-50 series "L" car or two so that I can move forward with my Skokie Swift set. I'm also constantly on the lookout for more CA&E rolling stock. And yet I don't find either of these, but I manage within three weeks to acquire two. O scale North Shore Line cars. The new car arrived today. A side-by-side comparison of the ends of the two cars. Tuesday, October 7, 2014. The Visit to the Museum. Equipment so that I can corre...
