Oscar's experiments in communication
Is that the time? Lord...: November 2012
http://oscarwindsor-smith.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Is that the time? Oscar's experiments in communication. Wednesday, 7 November 2012. Sure-fire Christmas Present No:1. The harder I work the luckier I get", is a quote attributed to various individuals, including Thomas Jefferson, Sam Goldwyn and Gary Player, but that maxim could justifiably have originated from the keyboard of my good friend and guest today on ItttL, Jonathan Pinnock. Published this week by Salt Publishing. Publishers of the 2012 Man Booker finalist The Lighthouse. Although… obviou...

Is that the time? Oscar's experiments in communication. Sunday, 26 January 2014. On Writing: In audio, the pictures are better (discuss? Do you recognise good writing when you hear it? The Verulam Writers' Circle Crystal Decanter and Gnome de Plume. We can probably agree that good writing is good writing, whatever the genre or subject of that writing, and we can probably also agree that we recognise good writing when we see it. But what about when we hear it? Fair enough, but how to achieve such images?
Is that the time? Lord...: November 2013

Is that the time? Oscar's experiments in communication. Saturday, 23 November 2013. An Appointment with The Doctor. Half a lifetime ago, in 1980 to be precise, a small Hertfordshire community service organisation called Bushey and Oxhey Round Table (BORT) received a visit from Doctor Who. To be quite honest I got the impression that Mr Baker – surrounded by his BBC minders (not Dennis Waterman, the real thing) – was not best pleased to be dragged around a Donkey Derby. In the event he did...Short story (...

Is that the time? Oscar's experiments in communication. Tuesday, 19 August 2014. Successful Author Exposed as Fraud. Hello again. I know, just as it seemed safe to re-enter the. Blogosphere I'm back to threaten your sanity with a post. Apologies, but another chance to interview my chum Jonathan Pinnock was too good to an opportunity to miss. So I'm levering the 'dangerous structure' signs from the door and brushing away the cobwebs for the first time in months. For the benefit of the few fans remaining u...

Is that the time? Oscar's experiments in communication. Saturday, 18 July 2015. London Short Story Festival - Caption Competition. Ah, so it's just me then. Anyway, here's one pic from this years unforgettable #LSSF that I thought was asking for a caption competition. What do you think that cheeky Paul McVeigh is whispering? Seriously, do you think I'm made of money? Get stuck in there my creative buddies, but do please be kind. Forgive me, Paul. London Short Story Festival. Some of my Published Stuff.

Pike's Quest: Perception
http://pikesquest.blogspot.com/2012/07/perception.html
Sunday, 1 July 2012. Let me tell you about Sara Viti. First of all, I don't know her, but we made contact via Goodreads. For those who don't know, Goodreads is a reading and writing community with more than nine-million members world wide. Any budding authors really ought to join - most of the early reviews for Pike's Quest. Emanated from the Goodreads community. Up until now my reviewers have, in the main, been on the upper side of thirty-years old (in some cases I am generously underestimating, here!
Pike's Quest: August 2012
http://pikesquest.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 29 August 2012. Learning from one's mistakes. OK, I haven't posted here for a while. Pike is undergoing a makeover at the moment. My original cover was the subject of some derision, and when I held a printed copy in my hand I had to agree that it could be better. I changed it to the now familiar "Pike nose-to nose with Horse" version and went ahead and published the paperback version. Sales have been slow. VERY slow. When my own sister read the book she said words to the effect of:.

Ephemeral wanderings of the mind Effie Merryl. Friday, 16 March 2012. Remembering Mothers and Others. This Mother's Day I will remember. I will remember a lot of things. My own mother who died just over two years ago. RIP. My husband’s mother who is in hospital in Spain, very poorly, with my husband by her side, her only child, and the place he should be at this moment. And for all of you out there with your mothers, or remembering your mothers, or wishing you didn’t have to, have a good weekend. I and m...
EphemeraBlog: March 2011
http://effiemerryl.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Ephemeral wanderings of the mind Effie Merryl. Sunday, 6 March 2011. On the day itself, I went to WHSmith in Hartlepool to buy a book. There are no independent bookshops in the town and this store is under threat of closure so I thought I would do my bit to help keep it in business. Confronted by scores of bookshelves, I found it difficult to make a choice. What sort of book should I pick? What sort of person would I give a particular book to? What would I like? I ended up buying four books. But she walk...
EphemeraBlog: December 2010

Ephemeral wanderings of the mind Effie Merryl. Wednesday, 22 December 2010. My Life in 2010 – Footprints, Open University and Writing. It’s that time of year when things come to a close and we reflect and consider. Self-indulgent perhaps. Necessary though. I think. Especially for self-conscious, insecure and worried individuals like me. The year started badly. My mum died on 22. But then came the positives. I don’t intend to dwell on the bad. Then in May we were shortlisted for the Hartlepool business aw...
EphemeraBlog: My So-Called World of Writing

Ephemeral wanderings of the mind Effie Merryl. Wednesday, 22 February 2012. My So-Called World of Writing. For a number of reasons, it’s been a while since I posted here. Most people wanted 2012 to be better than ever. I didn’t want 2012 to be better than ever because I know each year is a variation on a theme. Life doesn’t change with the chiming of Big Ben at midnight. It comes gradually, by making little changes over time. And I had quite liked 2011. And we send each other prompts daily and write for ...
EphemeraBlog: One Big Social Faux-Pas
http://effiemerryl.blogspot.com/2011/05/one-big-social-faux-pas.html
Ephemeral wanderings of the mind Effie Merryl. Tuesday, 31 May 2011. One Big Social Faux-Pas. I will be forty six this year. Forty six! How did I get to be so old? It’s a kinesthetic thing, the sense that deals with sensations of body position, posture, balance, and motion. Mine is out of kilter. It doesn’t help with my confidence. I’m a large clumsy oaf. I need to lose five stone. At least. I can’t look at the photographs from my graduation ceremony last weekend. I am a house-end. ...I can’t even ...
EphemeraBlog: April 2014
http://effiemerryl.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Ephemeral wanderings of the mind Effie Merryl. Friday, 25 April 2014. In support of Police Whistle Blower PC James Patrick. I haven’t blogged for a long time. It’s been too long. Now is the time to break the silence and what a better way to do it than with something worthwhile saying. In support of Police Whistle Blowers. PC James Patrick is someone the public want, and need, as a policeman. He is a man of honesty, integrity, and right. It’s easy to mingle with the crowd but it takes courage to sta...

Ephemeral wanderings of the mind Effie Merryl. Monday, 23 May 2011. So Much Has Happened and #thisiswhataromanticnovelistlookslike. Since I was last here, so much has happened. I have so much to blog about. It's good, right, that I've been so busy? Since I was last here I've been to Turkey to sort some final things in respect of my mother and to England, twice. I've had a number of stories published (for pay and otherwise) and my nursery has won TWO! I'm tempted to say 'I'm happy! So - as a writer who ha...

Is that the time? Oscar's experiments in communication. Saturday, 29 August 2015. Please read PS at foot). Make no mistake, I have enjoyed the first year of my four year Creative Writing degree course at Birkbeck. The tutors are excellent, the facilities are great – quirky in places but that's historic Bloomsbury for you, and to the creative mind quirky is like fresh air – and I have made a lot of great friends. But. I do hope an acceptable resolution will be forthcoming and soon. Otherwise what a sa...
