In het midden van de 19e eeuw ontwikkelde een Amerikaanse arts, dokter Andrew Talor Still, een nieuwe medische behandelingswijze. Op 22 juni 1874 noemde hij deze geneeswijze ‘osteopathie’. Het woord osteopathie is afgeleid van de Griekse woorden 'osteon' (bot) en 'pathos' (ziekte of aandoening). Dus letterlijk ‘aandoening van de beenderen’. Maar osteopathie is meer dan het behandelen van de beenderen. Osteopaten voelen en herstellen de beweeglijkheid van verschillende weefsels.

De behandeling begint met een gesprek. De osteopaat stelt vragen over de huidige klachten, klachten in het verleden, medische gegevens zoals RX, scan, bloedonderzoek enz. Nadien onderzoekt de osteopaat de patiënt aan de hand van manuele technieken. Hierna wordt beslist of de patiënt al dan niet osteopathisch behandeld kan worden. Indien nodig wordt de patiënt doorverwezen naar de huisarts.
