seiza is for sadists: re: blog title
http://seizaisforsadists.blogspot.com/2009/05/re-blog-title.html
Seiza is for sadists. Friday, May 8, 2009. Is the traditional manner of sitting in Japan (it literally means "proper sitting"- thank you, wiki). One gets into this position by kneeling and sitting back on to his or her feet to the point where they are flattened, heels outward, into a "v" shape. After approximately 45 seconds, this position is also absolute torture for those of us who haven't been doing it since early childhood. We find ourselves attempting seiza. Was just the beginning. In India I bullsh...

seiza is for sadists: December 2009

Seiza is for sadists. Monday, December 21, 2009. Frequency of subsequent posts depends on how often I avoid losing my camera cord. I know I'm long overdue for a real blog post. A real sweet one is coming soon, promsies. But in the mean time, take a look at some pics that I uploaded for the first time from the camera I bought back in September. As most of you know I live in the deep country side. It's so country, that we get frogs in our train station bathrooms. This one didn't quite make it, but it tried.

seiza is for sadists: May 2009
http://seizaisforsadists.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Seiza is for sadists. Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Japanese Men Are Like a Fine Wine. Don’t let him see that your feelings are kinda hurt. And don’t let him preemptively assume that you think he’s coldhearted and stingy, because you really don’t. Just put on a face that will prevent this moment from making every subsequent moment from here on out between you two totally awkward. Go! So I received the envelope in both hands, thanked him for considering it, and said “It’s totally OK; I understand! As the weath...

seiza is for sadists: let the pre-goodbye anxieties commence
http://seizaisforsadists.blogspot.com/2010/06/let-pre-goodbye-anxieties-commence.html
Seiza is for sadists. Monday, June 7, 2010. Let the pre-goodbye anxieties commence. I took the train into. So when Ai saw me waiting for the train yesterday, it was natural for her to sit right down next to me. We spent the next 10 minutes talking (I use the word loosely) about whatever we were able to: how we were that day (she was “hungry”), how much longer till the train is supposed to arrive, plans for the weekend. seiza is for sadists: Better Late...
http://seizaisforsadists.blogspot.com/2010/03/better-late.html
Seiza is for sadists. Friday, March 5, 2010. It's the end of April and it's still cold enough to wear a hat and gloves on most nights. But it's been warm and pleasant on enough afternoons these past two weeks for me to say with confidence that spring has finally come to Toyama. What better time to share all the photos of the freezing, dreadful, gorgeous winter we've had here? This last one is from the train ride home back to Fukuno from Taira. I'll try to make my next post a bit more seasonal.

seiza is for sadists: June 2010
http://seizaisforsadists.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Seiza is for sadists. Wednesday, June 16, 2010. Thursday, June 10, was Sports Day. For those back home who, Sports Day is a massive deal in most schools. So much so that classes are switched around or even canceled to give teams ample time (on top of the several days when they have to come in at 7.30 AM) to prepare and practice for the day’s big events. Team Blue - Pirate. Team Purple - (Devil [? Team White - Wolf. Team Red - Pierrot. Team Yellow - Bee. Mandatory 100 meter dashes. There’s a pile of...

seiza is for sadists: I <3 FUKUNO (slowly but surely)
http://seizaisforsadists.blogspot.com/2009/06/i-3-fukuno-slowly-but-surely.html
Seiza is for sadists. Sunday, June 7, 2009. This semi-abandoned building is where the local branch of yakuza supposedly “take care” of those who’ve slighted them. Sometimes when I walk back home late enough (usually after a night of heavy drinking) the building leaks sounds I wish I never had to hear; but I walk fast enough that I can easily blame what sounds of pain or remorse I think I hear on my imagination seven gin and tonics. That’s where I live. Jealous? The floor of this room is made of tatami, o...
