Sunday, August 31, 2014. A Day at the Beach. Yesterday we packed up our car and after a few false starts ("I forgot the sunscreen! I might not be a true naturist, but some days I think it would be so much easier to eschew the clothing with all of its fashions, labels, and pretensions and just walk out the door in my birthday suit. Friday, August 29, 2014. We added in a couple of avocados and mangoes at another stall where a large sign declared "No tocar! I kept my hands off the avocados. Becoming an offi...

Saturday, July 11, 2015. Dusting off the Trowel. With some of the wall paintings excavated and restored previously. Reacquainting myself with a dumpy level. Finding a TINY fragment of an ancient "safety pin". Many activities going on all at once: drawing, digging, and retrieving wall painting fragments. Matt busily capturing photos of the old excavations to incorporate with the new. Marble stairway still in place! The collapsed roof tiles becoming apparent. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Pulling into the small d...

Mona Vincent: The Oven Saga Continued
http://www.monavincent.com/2015/06/the-oven-saga-continued.html
Thursday, June 25, 2015. The Oven Saga Continued. General Spanish for the "squash" family) for some ravioli yesterday, I looked down and noticed that while I had set the oven for 200 C, it was currently at 250 C. I quickly turned the oven off and the calabaza happily finished roasting in the cooling oven. Disaster averted, I presented Matt with the news and he sent off an email to our landlord. Have we mentioned how much we love our landlords here? Id love to hear your thoughts! The Oven Saga Continued.

Friday, July 19, 2013. Scruffy, Beaky, and Brown Lady. A week in Berlin solved that problem! Scruffy sticking out his tongue. Beaky of the enormous beak. Just this morning I spotted a third character on the stand. I stared hard, trying to find any identifying marks but could only note an absence of color. She sat quietly, not sharpening beak or staring about wildly in search of a foe. She drank, sat, and then flew off. For now I have decided she is the Brown Lady, Beaky's girl. Monday, March 30, 2015. Impressions: On the Road. Jacket and gloves are not enough, it's cold! Bratislava Tram on the Loose. We move our pace to a loping walk instead of a forward march to give the impression of relaxation and enjoyment, but our time is short. Triple Bridge and Pink Church in Ljubljana. Dragon Bridge, Ljubljana. How about some ham? No, no, and no, thank you. Fried chicken? And stop frying everything! Port of San Rocco, Muggia. Europe Road Trip 2015. Wednesday, March 25, 2015. Wednesday, October 29, 2014. What Are We Doing Here? The researcher can't be from, or currently living in, the participating country where they apply. Several EU countries were participating, so it gives everyone a chance to find somewhere that fits, and Matt found Spain. Yes. Americans were allowed! Last week, Matt attended the first gathering of researchers in the ITN-DCH. Sunday, October 19, 2014. As I was stirring, stirring, stirring on the gravy, I lit the kettle so I could make tea. And Matt, ever ...

Sunday, November 30, 2014. Without all of my usual and much-beloved beautiful tableware or even my colorful table cloths, I was left without much besides the food on the presentation end. We did find green and brown plasticware (dishwasherable, even! What was on the menu? Juice and soda drinks, and a nice selection of traditional Christmas sweets including a Christmas bread, various turron. And crispy chocolate cookies. We all ate ourselves absolutely silly, and I kept laughing as someone would excla...

Mona Vincent: October 2012

Tuesday, October 30, 2012. A (Tooth) Fairy Tale. Sometimes while I stay here in Amman I get small glimpses into what it would be like to live here for more than a few months in the summer and early fall. Today I got a much larger glimpse than I anticipated of my nearly five month stay. Today I had an adventure of a rather dubious kind: I visited the dentist. Monday, October 1, 2012. It has been miserably hot and humid (yes, humid, in Jordan! Best of all, is the cool breeze that now rustles in my window a...
