Saturday, October 10, 2009. Tree Planting, Stove-Making and Science Centres. I shadowed Margaret to see what she does to manage the projects, and she arranged for me to experience the different aspects of the community's efforts. It was a vivid green, with orange and pink dots. It was really slow moving, so I picked it up and it carefully climbed up my arm. . Et picking the pods. Back at the compound, we sat on stools and pulled the tiny seeds out of the dry pods and collected them in shallow baskets.

Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Long Day in Rwebisengo. Charcoal is a huge conservation problem here and in Congo because is requires so much deforestation. Clearly there is a lot of room for improvement by the end of the program! One question asked the importance of having many different birds and insects. The answer we are looking for is pollination, so I was surprised when a student responded, "birds collect sunlight." I wonder what he was thinking. We finished at Makondo just before 5, and we were an ...

Saturday, April 3, 2010. RE: A Visit to the Kings Palace. If you've been following my blog for a while, you might remember my visit to the King's Palace back in December, when I went to town to renew my visa. Well I was checking Invisible Children's blog the other week, and they had posted a story from CNN about the Tooro King, who's only 17 and has been king since he was only 3 years old. This King's Palace is where I visited, yeah it's real! Visiting Karugutu, going from home to home to talk about and ...

Wednesday, September 9, 2009. Chimp Tracking, elephants, and a first meeting. I have been at Semliki. For one week already. I am all unpacked and settled in, and I finally adjusted to the time change. It is very restful here; I am not busy at all. And that is awesome. I have mostly just been resting, and have really enjoyed sitting around reading or watching movies when the power is on. After a busy summer and busy school-years, the slower change of pace is very refreshing. As it is the end of the dry se...

Wednesday, October 14, 2009. There are some small green snakes, like the one below, that hang around the lodge. They aren't venomous, and. 160; I see them sunning themselves sometimes in the morning when I sit up at the lodge eating cereal and drinking coffee. Two ridiculously venomous snakes in one night! We had dinner really late that night, but fortunately there were only two guests, an older Italian man named Adolpho and his driver, and they did not mind waiting. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Wednesday, October 7, 2009. Community Action Project (CAP). Last week I did something different. I had the opportunity to learn about conservation and community development projects in Kabarole, a district of Uganda that borders Kibale National Park. Wednesday I caught a ride to Fort Portal with Eddson, the chimp camp manager. From there I took a boda-boda to Rainforest Guesthouse in Kasese, Kabarole, about half an hour from Fort Portal. Most Ugandans do not have electricity, so they rely on fire for coo...

Monday, October 5, 2009. Last Sunday was one of my favorite days so far. I climbed the escarpment with Maggie, her friend Barrett who is visiting from his primate research in Ethiopia, Simon a guide from the lodge, and Alimosi a UWA ranger who led the way. But anyway we had an early start, and around seven we picked up the people from the chimp camp and drove to the trailhead to begin our hike. View of the escarpment from the lodge). This tree was growing straight out of a boulder, it was crazy. The fart...
