Heading South: February 2010
http://lian-heading-south.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 28, 2010. Charleston, SC – Washington, DC. Monday, February 22. Charleston, SC – Elizabeth Town, NC. Tuesday, February 23. Elizabeth Town, NC – Washington, DC. Monday morning it was time to head home – after one final breakfast with my friend. He sleeps with a CPAP machine to help him breathe. I had never heard of one of these, but the mask makes him look like someone who has been taken over by aliens in an episode of Doctor Who. Until the next trip…. Friday, February 19. High 61, Low 34.

Heading South: Washington, DC- South of the Border, SC
http://lian-heading-south.blogspot.com/2010/02/monday-february-15.html
Sunday, February 28, 2010. Washington, DC- South of the Border, SC. Monday, February 15. High 53, Low 32. I dug my car out from under the Beetle-shaped snowdrift behind my house, made a run over the ice in the alley, and I was away south to warmer weather and new adventures. I sailed through Virginia without stopping, seeking to thread the needle between the snow that surprising hit Atlanta and the snow (would you believe ANOTHER 1-3 inches? My goal for the day was South of the Border, an iconic Mexican-...

Heading South: March 2010
http://lian-heading-south.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 25, 2010. Addendum: New York City. March 5-7, 2010. Alright, alright, I know this is a blog about heading south from Washington, and this last post is about a trip NORTH. Did I say there was any logic to my ramblings? Anyway, my friend from Charleston had the chutzpah to say that. I arrived late at night…and left late at night. I wasn’t too late, and I had an excellent Indian lunch and caught up on years of goings on well into the afternoon. Then, I strolled out of lunch, into Grand Centr...

Heading South: Atlanta, GA
http://lian-heading-south.blogspot.com/2010/02/atlanta-ga.html
Sunday, February 28, 2010. Wednesday, February 17. Augusta, GA - Atlanta, GA. High 44, Low 27. Thursday, February 18. High 51, Low 28. Today I headed for Atlanta to see a high school friend – and ring. I was surprised to discover her seven months pregnant, with twins. Obviously, I had been out of touch too long. But no, it turns out she is acting as a surrogate mother for a gay couple in Washington, DC. How cool is that? Doughnuts, then moved on to Mexican food – guacamole! Back downtown, I wandered by A...

Around the World in 56 3/4 Days: Hawaii
http://around-world-56-days.blogspot.com/2011/09/hawaii.html
Around the World in 56 3/4 Days. Friday, September 2, 2011. Weight limit for suitcases = 23kg. My case = 22.9kg. Am I good, or what? Today was my day to travel back in time. I left Auckland on Saturday morning – and arrived in Honolulu on Friday night. What I really wanted to do was ring in Auckland on Sunday morning, and then ring in Honolulu on the same Sunday morning. I don’t know why they didn’t schedule the flights so I could do this. That’s not too bad, is it? Since I remembered my first sunburn ha...

Around the World in 56 3/4 Days: New Zealand -- South Island
http://around-world-56-days.blogspot.com/2011/08/new-zealand-south-island.html
Around the World in 56 3/4 Days. Monday, August 29, 2011. New Zealand - South Island. I learned about the 5.9 earthquake outside of Washington, DC the morning I was due to head to Christchurch. How ironic that I was due to be the first ringing visitor to Christchurch the same day as ringing was suspended in Washington due to stones falling from the cathedral parapet during the earthquake. Coincidence, or another synchronicity? I hope my house was not too perturbed by the unexpected disturbance. The drive...

Around the World in 56 3/4 Days: July 2011
http://around-world-56-days.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Around the World in 56 3/4 Days. Sunday, July 31, 2011. After two days in Sydney it was time to take my first trans-continental journey across Australia on the Indian Pacific train from Sydney to Perth. This takes three nights and almost four days, so I opted for a sleeper car on this train to ease myself gradually from the luxury of the train in South Africa toward the “day/nighter” seat I plan to use for my one night on the Ghan. I love my single cabin. The other end has the sink and overhead rack.
