St Stephen was the first Christian martyr - he was stoned to death shortly after Christ's crucifixion. According to legend, St Pancras was martyred as a teenage boy in Rome, 304AD. This church occupies what is probably the most ancient Christian site in Exeter. A simple form of Communion, using present-day language and lasting about half an hour, is held at 1.15pm every Tuesday. This church is usually open on weekdays. It is part of the Small Pilgrim Places Network.

Arches possibly derives from an arched thoroughfare outside the church in medieval times. It has been much altered and renovated over the centuries.
