Basically Speaking: The Sixty-Nine Cent Christmas
http://basicblab.blogspot.com/2011/12/sixty-nine-cent-christmas_8320.html
Basic Thoughts from a Basic Guy. Friday, December 23, 2011. The Sixty-Nine Cent Christmas. One Christmas I’ll never forget happened many years ago in Southern Idaho. Early in my career as a religious educator I found myself teaching at a small high school near Blackfoot. We had three young sons at the time, which made it hard to pack everything needed to travel for the holidays. Money was tight and it was looking like a meager Christmas. So this Christmas, if you find yourself short on cash, remember tha...

Basic Thoughts from a Basic Guy. Saturday, July 21, 2012. Obama's Victory in Defeat. Well, it's been a while since I last posted. I've wanted to, but no profound thought has surfaced to the top. I know, you're thinking that nothing profound has ever risen to the top with me. That might be more accurate than I'd like to admit. Nevertheless, something finally surfaced and I'm going to share it. Because he will glory in the fact that he successfully duped the American people. He'll declare that American...

Basically Speaking: Questions to Answer

Basic Thoughts from a Basic Guy. Sunday, July 7, 2013. Gosh, it's been almost a year since my last entry. I guess tough medicine is hard to take. I'm still not over the real sense of loss from our most recent presidential election. I know you can't win them all, but I had expended a lot of time, thought and hope on this one. The loss stunned me. It could. How about a writer's blog? It could be that too. Gardening? Sure, why not. It's got to be hiking! September 11, 2013 at 12:44 PM. Other Blogs I Check.

Basic Thoughts from a Basic Guy. Saturday, December 31, 2011. Let the Wind of Change Blow. The wind blew like crazy last night. Our windows rattled, screens shook, and sounded ominous. The lights flickered and interrupted our reading for a moment. I looked at my wife and assured her we had a working flashlight nearby. Then I thought of the new generator I got for Christmas. Would we have to use it so soon? I hadn't even unboxed it yet. Has it been hard to “see” clearly? If so, maybe 2012 can provide a ne...

Basic Thoughts from a Basic Guy. Thursday, September 29, 2011. Just Who has "Diluted" God's Word? As I follow the current run for president and consider the political landscape, I continue to be struck by the Mormon issue. It’s not fading away… especially among our evangelical friends. You don’t have to look very far to find a worried evangelical declaring that a vote for a Mormon is a vote for the dark side (or something like that). Did I hear that right? Talk about diluting God’s word, how about ...

Basically Speaking: December 2010

Basic Thoughts from a Basic Guy. Wednesday, December 22, 2010. The US can learn from the UK on this one. Well, it’s Christmas and, like you, I’m often looking for good ideas for gift giving… especially for kids. Gift giving gets pretty difficult as the years build up on you. When my wife asks, “What do you want for Christmas? It’s just as challenging when trying to figure out what to give. Why would the country or purveyor of 80% of all internet porn think to make the internet safer for our children?

Basic Thoughts from a Basic Guy. Saturday, November 20, 2010. It's all about Spin. I remember as a kid getting spun round and round by friends and then they’d step away and laugh as I dizzily stumbled this way and that and finally falling to the ground. Of course, I’d do it right back to someone else… all in the name of fun. 8221; Now that sounds pretty serious. So tell me, in your opinion, which one of these two approaches represents spin and which one represents reporting a news story? Some may argue t...

Basic Thoughts from a Basic Guy. Monday, July 25, 2011. Mr Obama: Mr. Compromise Once Again. I sat and watched Mr. Obama tonight. Maybe you did too. He engaged me with his genuine plea to work together. He admitted that Washington is dysfunctional, over-spends, and is self-serving. Mr. Obama invited everyone to sacrifice, including himself, to save America. It was great. When it was over I began to wonder, where was this president during the past three years? It didn’t exist.
