The Art of Photography: Projects 57 and 58: the lighting angle, contrast and shadow fill
http://paulajphotography.blogspot.com/2010/09/projects-57-and-58.html
The Art of Photography. Paula Jackman's Learning Log. Wednesday, 1 September 2010. Projects 57 and 58: the lighting angle, contrast and shadow fill. For a couple of projects with comparatively limited additional equipment, I followed the instructions to look at the impact of the different positions of lights, the use of a diffuser and the use of reflectors. Here are a few of the resulting images. The ear and back is too dark here - the light I think was too far away. Light too strong and close here with ...

The Art of Photography: November 2009
http://paulajphotography.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
The Art of Photography. Paula Jackman's Learning Log. Saturday, 28 November 2009. Somewhat perversely I've put together my submission for Assignment 2 before working my way through the projects that precede it. If you have any thoughts or observations on my images which are at http:/ www.flickr.com/photos/paulaj2/sets/72157622892612420/. I would be delighted to learn from them. Wednesday, 25 November 2009. Project 28 - rhythm and pattern. Through his knitting, mosaic, needlepoint and quilt designs. While...

The Art of Photography: September 2009
http://paulajphotography.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
The Art of Photography. Paula Jackman's Learning Log. Saturday, 5 September 2009. Project 22 - curves. These are all pretty self-explanatory: curves. Depending on the length of the curve depends on where your eye goes. Working in black and white does tend to emphasise the shape rather than get distracted by colours. This is inside the lighthouse at Dungeness. And so is this . but it's part of the light-making mechanism (despite working with engineers that doesn't make me one! Project 21 - diagonals.

The Art of Photography: December 2009
http://paulajphotography.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
The Art of Photography. Paula Jackman's Learning Log. Wednesday, 30 December 2009. Project 39 - using faster film and higher sensitivity. This project is about using increasing ISO levels to capture images that would not be possible using medium speed film (is it still called film in the land of digital? Brighton pier - helter skelter view. The image created using an ISO of 400 is less clear due to camera shake and the longer exposure time - but is also less grainy. ISO 3200 1/60 sec f5.6. Although the s...

The Art of Photography: February 2010
http://paulajphotography.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
The Art of Photography. Paula Jackman's Learning Log. Saturday, 27 February 2010. Project 50 - rain. I've really focused on the effects. Of rain in this project as previous images taken in the rain tend to be a little dull. Maybe I just haven't found the right subject. Mostly these effects are reflections taken in different lighting conditions. Unfortunately at this time of year there aren't many flowers out to make interesting water image droplets but this euphorbia does have some potential particularly...

The Art of Photography: January 2010
http://paulajphotography.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
The Art of Photography. Paula Jackman's Learning Log. Thursday, 21 January 2010. Project 44 - low sun. The sun is pretty low almost all of the time at the moment so it was a good time to take these images of Bodiam Castle to demonstrate the different effects of its position. This image shows the sun hitting the castle full on. The combination of that as well as the angle of the sun does make it appear flat and two dimensional. Project 42 - judging colour temperature. In this image it was the middle of a ...

The Art of Photography: August 2009
http://paulajphotography.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
The Art of Photography. Paula Jackman's Learning Log. Monday, 31 August 2009. Project 18 - relationship between points. A not dissimilar project, but this time between two points. While this scene is a little busier than the swimmer the river seems to be sufficiently isolating to make the point, as it were. Now it strikes me, maybe boats were a bad thing to choose, and on a river as well, because their action is predictable, to a certain extent? I had come up with some ideas for points, as requested in p...

The Art of Photography: August 2010
http://paulajphotography.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
The Art of Photography. Paula Jackman's Learning Log. Tuesday, 31 August 2010. Artificial light: the problem - and an alternative solution. So I've effectively decided to dip out of this part of the course. For the first time in my life I'm going to be radical and not follow instructions so my responses to these projects are a bit few and far between, and the assignment reflects that as well. So I'm going to set myself up to fail. According to the BBC's Big Personality Test. F5, 04 sec, ISO 400 handheld.

The Art of Photography: October 2009
http://paulajphotography.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
The Art of Photography. Paula Jackman's Learning Log. Friday, 9 October 2009. Like many doing The Art of Photography, I came from the Open University's T189 course . and now, several months after sending off the end-of-course assessment (the photos included in that are on the early pages of this blog), feedback has been received and I include it as part of the learning process. I also soon hope to have feedback from Assignment 1, which will obviously be more relevant. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
