Pin Dancing: February 2011
http://pindancing.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 4, 2011. The repertoire method in "Concrete Mathematics". By Knuth et al is a great book but there are a couple of places where people learning by themselves can stumble, fall and get lost. The most popular post is this one. So I re-read the repertoire method post today and while it is correct, I can explain it better today so here goes. What follows may not make sense to you if you are not working through CM (be warned! A) make a table of the recurrence values R(n) for small values of n.
Pin Dancing: December 2010

Saturday, December 11, 2010. The answer to "Will you mentor me? Ok that was the nutshell version. If that answers your question, that's great. The more detailed answer is "No, I won't mentor you,but in this blog entry I will tell you what to do instead, to get where you want to go". And I can reply with the url to this post the next time someone requests mentoring. I have some experience in this, so let me try to explain a couple of things that I learned in the "school of hard knocks". I sent him a zippe...
Pin Dancing: On Owning a Kindle
http://pindancing.blogspot.com/2011/08/on-owning-kindle.html
Monday, August 15, 2011. On Owning a Kindle. I was gifted a Kindle a month or so ago. I like it for what it does. Should you buy one? If you are a book lover, one of those people who always have a book on hand, or reach for one when you have an hour to spare, you definitely should. If you read mostly technical or math books (which require a lot of flipping back and forth and good rendering of code or equations)or research papers, you won't get as much benefit as you ought to. Pin Dancing: Sudoku in Coders At work
http://pindancing.blogspot.com/2009/09/sudoku-in-coders-at-work.html
Friday, September 11, 2009. Sudoku in Coders At work. Once upon a time, I wrote this blog entry. Peter Norvig references it (indirectly) in his interview in Peter Seibel's great new book "Coders At Work". Seibel: Though your job now doesn’t entail a lot of programming you still write programs for the essays on your web site. When you’re writing these little programs, how do you approach it? Seibel: So then the question is, how should he have known that? Norvig: How do you know what you don’t know? Have t...

Running Upstairs: Fad Alert

Ravi Mohan's Tech Blog. To read my non technical blog, click here. Friday, January 30, 2009. With a subsection of the Ruby Fanboy crowd moving to Clojure, there is a lot of uninformed talk about Software Transactional Memory (STM), mostly regarding how it "solves" concurrency in a multiple core scenario and how it is very "intuitive". Bryan Cantrill restores sanity to the discussion via his blog post, "Concurrency's Shysters". Be sure to read the ACM paper. He refers to in the post). I am sure the origin...

My latest discovery is that there are two "levels" (for lack of a better word) Mathematics - one inhabited by engineers and one by mathematicians. This divide seems to carry over into books as well - thus, taking Calculus as an example, Gilbert Strang's book. Is an Engineer's guide and Spivak's book. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
Running Upstairs: An Unsatisfactory Proof
http://runningupstairs.blogspot.com/2008/10/unsatisfactory-proof.html
Ravi Mohan's Tech Blog. To read my non technical blog, click here. Friday, October 3, 2008. If the symmetric difference of sets A and B is a subset of A, prove that B is a subset of A". Symmetric difference of A and B = A U B A B (using U for union , for intersection and for difference). What I've come up with. Let x be an arbitrary element of B. Then x is also an element of A (case 1) or it is not (case 2). If an arbitrary element of B is an element of A then B is a subset of A . X in B and x not in A.

The one minor nitpick I have is that most of the java ide s don't work well with git, but at least to me that is a blessing in disguise. I had planned to do a project with the Java/Eclipse combination but git (and the development workflow it enables) was so compelling that I am using Emacs and Haskell instead. Which is a definite win. :-). Friday, February 6, 2009. One approach is to comp...

Ravi Mohan's Tech Blog. To read my non technical blog, click here. Monday, February 15, 2010. I am just testing how far the built in blogger editor can help in laying out proofs. Please ignore this. Question: prove distributivity of OR over OR ( I am using "OR" and "AND" for disjunction and conjunction operators , = for equivalence. The reasoning for each step is to the side after a - ),. Prove p OR (q OR r) = (p OR q) OR (p OR r). P OR (q OR r) - LHS. P OR q) OR r) - associativity of Or. P OR q) OR (p O...

Ravi Mohan's Tech Blog. To read my non technical blog, click here. Sunday, March 22, 2009. Is a great (e)book. I got the early access version from Manning and it is very well written. Phillip Jaanert has done a great job. I've been using it to visualize the output of some algorithms I've been coding up. Here is a graph I created with GnuPlot for the optimal decisions for different learning rates for 2000 one armed bandits (essentially a stateless value function less precursor to Reinforcement Learning).

Saturday, February 2, 2013. Silence and Flow - Minor updates to my preferred workstyle. Recently I found myself, half by intent and half by circumstance, cut off almost completely from the internet. No email, no twitter, no HackerNews. I don't have TV or cable. I also refused to answer my cellphone, handing it over to a friend to monitor. (He knew how to contact me in an emergency). And I loved it. A few withdrawal symptoms for the first few days, but I've never been so productive in my life before.
