Pints and Potatoes: June 2008

http://www.pintsandpotatoes.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 30, 2008. Today we took it easy. The weather was bad and Laura and I were both feeling worn out, so aside from a walk up to the local department store for supplies we just stayed in and watched some Irish television and cooked. I did, however, find a couple of opportunities on the walk to take some photos. If I could say one thing about Galway, it would be that it is the prettiest place I have ever been. I am excited to see more of the surrounding area on our geology field trips. I've never ...

Pints and Potatoes: Alcohol in Belgium

http://www.pintsandpotatoes.blogspot.com/2008/08/alcohol-in-belgium.html

Monday, August 11, 2008. One of the nights we were in. We went to a bar called Delirium. Delirium advertises something like 1000 beers, with around 40 varieties on tap. It was quite an experience. The other notable drink in. Is the half and half, which supposedly started at a cafe called Cirio. We went there to try it, though it is now apparently available all over. August 11, 2008 at 2:27 PM. Ahh, I suppose I forgot to mention that kriek is that cherry flavored beer. post edited. Our time in Prague.

Pints and Potatoes: Belgium and Comics

http://www.pintsandpotatoes.blogspot.com/2008/08/belgium-and-comics.html

Saturday, August 9, 2008. We also went to the comic museum one day. It was very interesting, even if it was mostly in French and Dutch. The museum showed the breadth of comic book variety, and was very neat. They also had a decent section on the process that goes into making comics, which is surprisingly intense, particularly for color comics. Wasn't Tin Tin a racist? August 9, 2008 at 2:40 PM. South for the Summer: 6/29/08 - 7/6/08

http://southforthesummer.blogspot.com/2008_06_29_archive.html

South for the Summer. Daily updated adventures in Latin America. Saturday, July 5, 2008. Friday, July 4, 2008. I met up with Rosa and a group of her friends to go clubbing and accidentally got sloshed on aguardiente. Aguardiente is a sugary, anise flavored liqueur that's extremely cheap and extremely Colombian. It's the most potent liqueur I've ever encountered (probably 55 proof). It's the fourth of July (lowercase f) and, just like last year in India, nobody gives a damn. If I hadn't gotten faceboo...

South for the Summer. Daily updated adventures in Latin America. Saturday, June 21, 2008. I think people must be selling birdfeed; I saw people throwing something seedlike at them. One little boy kept throwing food to get the birds concentrated in one area so he could charge at them more easily. Small children chasing birds is completely the most adorable thing, they really believe they'll be able catch them but if they ever did they'd be completely at a loss as to what to do next. South for the Summer. Daily updated adventures in Latin America. Saturday, July 26, 2008. Costa Rica is home to 54 different species of hummingbird, and as a result they are quite easy to spot. Hummingbird feeders are also popular. They move so fast I've never caught more than brief glimpses of them back home, but here there are hummingbird gardens with dozens of them zooming around. I had no idea ornithology could be non-lame. Coolest bird ever. Friday, July 25, 2008. Typically, the eggs are laid in hos...

South for the Summer. Daily updated adventures in Latin America. Friday, August 15, 2008. I'm finally heading home and I have to say, it feels like Time. I exchanged contact information with the two other Spanish students, Megan (left) and Susanne (right), said goodbye to everyone in the house, and headed for the airport in Guatemala City. I was a little worried because I'd contracted a mild case of the ol' Montezuma's Revenge but I self medicated and the flights passed uneventfully. I decided to take a ...

South for the Summer. Daily updated adventures in Latin America. Saturday, August 2, 2008. Anyway, Sandino became a big deal national hero and the party that bears his namesake (the Sandinistas) were the ones who eventually overthrew the Somoza regime in 1979 after a bloody civil war. I checked out a museum in memory of the Estelí people who died. Here's a photo of Juan Carlos, the brother of one of the museum staff members, who died fighting the Somoza army at age 15. South for the Summer: La Barbota

South for the Summer. Daily updated adventures in Latin America. Sunday, August 10, 2008. As much as I value not having to shave during my vacation, the beard has gotten completely out of control. It itches, food gets caught in it, and everyone thinks I'm like 30. This picture was taken weeks ago, its even worse now. The family I'm staying with has nicknamed me el barbuchín after a famous Guatemalan children's book. It literally means small person with big beard. August 10, 2008 at 12:31 PM.

Ahh, you do look a little more civilized, but i still think a quick trip to Lance is in order. BTW, I tried calling you on El Telefono a couple times but always get busy circuit or some recorded message in Spanish that I can't understand. So maybe I'll just stick to La Interneta for communication for now. August 11, 2008 at 10:29 PM.
