Third Principal Meridian

The Third Principal Meridian. This point was established in 1815 and is the cornerstone of 60% of the land in Illinois including Chicago. Because the original marker is buried under route 51 this marker replaces it with an an exact offset to the original. This satellite picture clearly shows the effect of grid surveying. The 3rd PM is on highway 51 to the right of the red dot. To the left is the Rock Island Railroad. Centralia IL is above.

Michigan Principal Meridian

He original Initial Point for Michigan was surveyed from the south up to the point due to the many swamps, rivers, and lakes. They used a zig-zag pattern to establish the location. The marker was put in the ground October 1815 by Benjamin Hough. The land west of the rangeline of 1 west and 1 east in 1815 belonged to the Indians from the Detroit Treaty. All surveys in 1815 and 1816 remained to the East of the Michigan Meridian. East base line Meridian. The step monument from 1970.

Second Principal Meridian

The Second Principal Meridian. Ebenezer Buckingham established this initial point in 1805. The base line was started and the western point of Clark's Grant and run to the Illinois border. The meridian divides the state in half. By determining the lines in this manner the initial point falls in a heavily wooded area next to a dry stream bed. The following exhibits clearly show the results of grid surveying. Highways and rural land ownership typically fall along these lines. Path to the marker.

Washington_St Helena

Washington and St Helena. This is another unusual Meridian as it is two. The base line is the Louisiana/Mississippi border. The Washington Meridian goes north and regulates Mississippi while starting at the same point The St Helena meridian travels south into Louisiana. Initial Points of the Rectangular Survey System.
