December | 2010 | A view from the grassroots

https://pnak.wordpress.com/2010/12

A view from the grassroots. Monthly Archives: December 2010. Year in review: What did I ship in 2010? In the spirit of sharing what I was able to “ship” (i.e. get my work “out there”), here’s a list of things from 2010:. 8211; Completed my 8 month Fellowship with the Aga Khan Foundation Canada. Survived (and occasionally thrived) my experience with a microfinance bank in Pemba, Mozambique. 8211; Had an excellent summer back in Canada spending time with friends and family. OK, so not all of the things tha...

We’re back! | A view from the grassroots

https://pnak.wordpress.com/2009/08/23/were-back

A view from the grassroots. So, the blog has been out of commission for the last little while (ahem, 3 weeks or so) since the internet at my house hasn’t been working. WELL, the good news is that the landlord has gotten us connection to a different router and we’re back in business. Yay! Much apologies for the lack/sporadic updating, and there’s quite a bit to catch up on. Hopefully I can cram as many posts before the end of this month so we can get you caught up. Thanks and all the best from Mozambique!

Wedding! | A view from the grassroots

https://pnak.wordpress.com/2009/08/23/wedding

A view from the grassroots. Last week, I had the opportunity to go to one of my co-workers wedding. It was a really cool experience because it was held in a traditional Muslim style and I’d never been to a Muslim wedding before. I believe this was the mosques mullah opening the mens portion of the wedding ceremony. Ismael, the groom, is sitting in the middle. Ismael answering a series of questions (Im thinking they were wedding vows or something). The bride waiting for the groom. Unveiling of the bride.

A Shared Dislike | A Mazungu's Journey Blog

https://amazungujourney.wordpress.com/2009/10/06/a-shared-dislike

A Mazungu's Journey Blog. Just another WordPress.com weblog. October 6, 2009. At school, I disliked most being caned. I lived very far away, sometimes I was late, and when I was late I was beaten. I disliked most when children were beaten, I don’t like children being beaten. The last two weeks I have monitored and evaluated several teacher training workshops on literacy methods, instructional material making, guidance and counseling and child’s rights and responsibilities. While I was thinking over my pr...

https://amazungujourney.wordpress.com/2009/09/22/a-place-to-call-home

A Mazungu's Journey Blog. Just another WordPress.com weblog. September 22, 2009. A place to call Home. The same day I arrived in London. A mere eight-hour stopover allowed for me to view Buckingham palace! Now I sit in Johannesburg terminal waiting for my flight to return me to my current home in Kampala. 43 hours of transit and several different cities. Each place its own unique treasure. Some more explicitly beautiful than others, but each city a gem. Laquo; A New Route. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Vegetable of Last Week: Fiddleheads | dancing in the rain

https://tomorrowswisdom.wordpress.com/2015/05/27/vegetable-of-last-week-fiddleheads

Dancing in the rain. Travel, food, life. Vegetable of Last Week: Fiddleheads. May 27, 2015. This was my first time working with fiddleheads. Maybe my first time having fiddleheads (I may have had something similar when visiting Taiwan). I decided to do something relatively simple so that I can experience the flavour of fiddleheads. Juice of 1/2 lemon. 1/2 tsp of lemon zest. A dash of red pepper flakes. Add the shrimp, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Cook for a couple of minutes more. May 28, 2015 at 9:22 pm.

Vegetable of the Week: Kale | dancing in the rain

https://tomorrowswisdom.wordpress.com/2015/06/17/vegetable-of-the-week-kale

Dancing in the rain. Travel, food, life. Vegetable of the Week: Kale. June 17, 2015. For our CSA share this week, we received a bunch of kale and asparagus. Kale is not my husband’s favourite vegetable but he enjoyed both of the kale dishes I made this week. 1 bunch of kale – cut stem into 1 cm pieces and cut leaves into ribbons. 1 can of chickpea – rinsed and drained. 1 tomato – diced. Juice and zest of 1 lemon. 1 onion – chopped. Salt and pepper to taste. Rice or couscous to serve with. You are comment...

My Cloth Diapering Experience So Far | dancing in the rain

https://tomorrowswisdom.wordpress.com/2015/01/29/my-cloth-diapering-experience-so-far

Dancing in the rain. Travel, food, life. My Cloth Diapering Experience So Far. January 29, 2015. My husband and I decided that we would try cloth diapering. We heard that it did not always work out for people, but I was pretty determined to make it work. My sister-in-law had given us some prefolds, diaper covers, and liners from Bummis, which helped with the starting costs. I wanted to try washing diapers on our own first before exploring other options. What I started with:. 3 Super Brite Diaper Covers.

What I Have Learned So Far | dancing in the rain

https://tomorrowswisdom.wordpress.com/2015/03/30/what-i-have-learned-so-far

Dancing in the rain. Travel, food, life. What I Have Learned So Far. March 30, 2015. Being a parent has taught me:. People will always have an opinion about how you will raise your child. Embrace every moment (although not baby-specific). As my husband said, “before you know it, he would be surly teenager.”. This is me-specific: I am definitely a project-oriented person. Too Much Blue Sky. A selection of musings about life in New Delhi. July 8, 2009 in Uncategorized. I’ve arrived in Delhi safely, without any major airline/airport related hurdles, and have moved into my new room. 1 It’s hot. 2 I don’t need half the crap I bought with me. 3 I am going to have to buy a new wardrobe. 4 There’s a lot of men…everywhere. And I don’t mean in a “ooh look at all the hotties” way. 5 I seriously miss everyone. 6 This is going to be harder than I thought. 7 It’s hot. You are commenti...

Aisa hi hai | Too Much Blue Sky

https://soloelixir.wordpress.com/2009/07/15/aisa-hi-hai

Too Much Blue Sky. A selection of musings about life in New Delhi. July 15, 2009 in Beginnings. When I mentioned to Subhash how inefficient the whole set up was…he looked at me and said, “aisa hi hai” (that’s just how it is). I guess that sums up the whole bureaucratic system here: the frequent power outages, the lineups, the disinterested personnel….Aisa hi hai. What Did You Have For Dinner? Taking a Rickshaw to the Oberoi. The Roof is on Fire. I am roaming the earth bewildered. July 15, 2009 at 1:56 pm.
