Thursday, December 18, 2014. Trying To Catch A Storm. We had a wonderful time. That's an iPhone shot on the beach at Cape Kiwanda. Photo tip of the day: always go with a companion who owns a red jacket (in this case, my lovely wife Nancy, a real trooper), and have them stay a few steps ahead of you. It's better than buying a new lens! It's almost Christmas, the crowds are gone, the weather is perfect, and that camera in your hand is the best damn camera in the world. You've run out of excuses. I didn't p...

Thursday, July 9, 2015. Zen and The Art Of The Honest Portrait. That's always a tough question to answer - if you leave out the guy who invented tequila, anyway - but there are certainly two I'm always likely to mention. The two styles they represent, while producing very distinct imaging, possess one fundamental key in common: simplicity. So what advice do I hand out during a workshop where we're studying lighting and posing? Simplify . simplify . simplify. Posted by Dave Hutt. January 8, 2016 at 9:16 PM.

Dave Hutt Photography Blog: March 2015

Thursday, March 26, 2015. On Sharp Lenses and Fuzzy Brains. One of my all-time favorite maxims, from that wonderful compendium of T. Orland, is this: when man creates a sharper lens, nature will create a fuzzier subject. I'm reminded of this every time I find myself in a conversation about cameras and lenses, which is pretty much all the time. Whether we deny it or not, deep inside we're all more-or-less gearheads. Life is funny that way. Posted by Dave Hutt. Thursday, March 19, 2015. Parked in a field w...

Thursday, February 26, 2015. A Short Discourse on Photography, the iPhone, and Urban Fishing. And that's exactly how I go fishing. It's not always necessary to drive for miles looking for the perfect photograph; more often than not, it's right in front of you just before you hit the check-out line. Oh, and the halibut I caught was delicious. And did I mention the sakè? Posted by Dave Hutt. Thursday, February 19, 2015. A Little Windowlight Love. But maybe a few beers. Posted by Dave Hutt. Thursday, June 11, 2015. 256 Shades of Grey. According to my little fantasies (and I have many), I strive to devote this humble blog to all things photographic, or at least many. This was not directly a question of RAW vs jpeg. This strikes right at the heart of what we do: can we find a way to meaningfully express our thoughts, our feelings, our world, in a mere 256 shades of gray? Go jpeg the hell out of something. Thursday, July 30, 2015. When I was a portrait photographer in northern California back in the '80s, I was a member of Friends of Photography,. And yes, I know, I wrote here a couple years back about the tactile and visceral experience of seeing great art in person. I'm a gallery hound. But wander as much as I do, I'm still usually not. Dave Hutt Photography Blog: September 2014

Thursday, September 25, 2014. More than most anything else in photography, I love faces. Even - no, especially. This one, a colorful window-washer Whitney and I saw this summer plying his craft in the Village. It was portraiture that attracted me to photography in the first place, and the iPhone is a wonderful tool for getting away from the studio to get images I wouldn't otherwise see. And if you're really, really, really. Not careful, you could end up making a selfie like this. Posted by Dave Hutt.

Thursday, April 30, 2015. Pictures, Pixels, and Poetry. I think I have a theory about photography, or at least why I do. Photography, and it involves rhythm, harmony, and the happy perfection of birthday cake. Oh yes. Why is it that I can hardly take ten steps without seeing something that moves me to photograph it?
