Sunday, 30 September 2012. The Incredible Book Eating Boy, by Oliver Jeffers. THE INCREDIBLE BOOK EATING BOY. All sorts of experts tell Henry that he must give up eating books. At first he feels sad, but then he picks up a half-eaten book and starts to read it. He enjoys it so much that he realises he could become the cleverest person in the world by reading book after book. So this is what he does, but every so often he can't resist nibbling the corner of a page. The Incredible Book Eating Boy.

Books for your little ones: October 2009
http://books4littleones.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Saturday, 31 October 2009. The Very Hungry Caterpillar. What would a picture book aimed at very young children need to encompass in order to achieve an enduring success? Should it be educational? Should it be colourful and cleverly designed? Should it lend itself well to reading aloud as well as appealing to young independent readers? Eric Carle's 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' combines all these elements, and in 2009 celebrates its fortieth anniversary. Thursday, 29 October 2009. The Kiss that Missed.

Wednesday, 14 July 2010. Clown, by Quentin Blake. My own experience of 'Clown' is with pre-school children, but I can see the book being used with children of primary-school age who could write their own text to accompany the pictures. I don't think they would find it too childish; in fact the humour would no doubt attract their interest. It could be an ideal resource for writing character descriptions and dialogue as well as narrative. Paperback, 32 pages. Red Fox, 1998. Sunday, 4 July 2010. Hedcuts in ...

Wednesday, 30 September 2009. Slobbages and wampfish roes, courtesy of Dahl. Having recognised Quentin Blake's delightful style of drawing on the front cover, I was initially disappointed to find that he has not illustrated the whole book. I needn't have been, as there is a fantastic variety of styles from the twenty-six artists who have contributed, including Babette Cole and Gerald Scarfe. Blake has written the foreword and has provided drawings for the opening of each section. Section three deals with...

Books for your little ones: Watch out! Big Bro's Coming, by Jez Alborough
http://books4littleones.blogspot.com/2010/05/watch-out-big-bros-coming-by-jez.html
Sunday, 30 May 2010. Big Bro's Coming, by Jez Alborough. 8221; which really makes the animals jump. The story ends with Big Bro marching his little brother off home while the others remark that he really is rough and tough. Jez Alborough's “Watch out! Big Bro's Coming”. Rough, tough and chimpanzee may not be the easiest words to read, but there is enough repetition of sentences throughout the book to making reading the story not too challenging. It is hard to go wrong with Jez Alborough, and if you and y...

Books for your little ones: November 2009
http://books4littleones.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, 28 November 2009. The Scallywags - David Melling. I would say that 'The Scallywags' is a book that can appeal to boys or girls alike, and I'm sure most adults will enjoy reading it aloud and pointing out all the hilarious details in Melling's illustrations. I borrowed a copy from a library, but I think it is a book that will stand a few readings and therefore may be well worth buying. Hodder Children's Books, 2007. Paperback, 30 pages. Price £5.99 (Amazon £4.49). Thursday, 26 November 2009.

Books for your little ones: Great Picture Books for Reading Aloud
http://books4littleones.blogspot.com/2010/06/great-picture-books-for-reading-aloud.html
Saturday, 19 June 2010. Great Picture Books for Reading Aloud. Shark in the Park by Nick Sharratt (Corgi Childrens, ISBN 0552549770) is the story of a young boy, Timothy Pope, who goes to the park with his telescope (which obviously rhymes with his name). Each time he looks through the telescope, he sees something that looks like the black fin of a shark, so he shouts out 'There's a shark in the park! The most successful reading-aloud sessions are likely to be those where the reader puts plenty of expres...
