Molecular Rapscallion since Twenty Eleven. Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Regular readers know that I've been collecting names of chemistry faculty moves. For a while now. I had to chuckle at this particular announcement, by friend of the blog. Prof Karl Gademann. From two clicks deep on his group's home page. Thanks to an eagle-eyed commenter for the link. Also, from both sites ( UZH. It would appear that Dr. Gademann looks most professional when posed behind a rotovap condenser. Monday, May 4, 2015. The lab in...

Rob Jackson's Blog. Foursquare/Swarm: return of badges, and mayorships (but not yet). It’s almost exactly a year since Foursquare changed from its old form, and introduced the Swarm app for checking in. Since then both apps have evolved, but when mayorships were removed, Foursquare lost one of its best features. Last week, Swarm’s update on Android included some quite big changes. Full details are here. The local crown stickers, for the most check-ins at a location among your friends, seem to have gone, ...

It's a fool who plays it cool by making his world a little colder. Mostly silly, with a 20% chance of science. Thursday, December 9, 2010. HOUSTON, WE HAVE GONE FOR LUNCH! HOUSTON, WE ARE GO FOR LAUNCH! I've always wanted to say that). This will be my last post on this blog. I'm not quitting, I'm just relocating! My new blog is here. And it's part of a brand spanking new blog network called Occam's Typewriter. So, for the change-averse among you, what should you expect to find over there? I'll keep this ...

Stages Of Succession: The Consequences Of No SRE Lessons
http://www.stagesofsuccession.com/2011/10/consequences-of-no-sre-lessons.html
Sunday, 16 October 2011. The Consequences Of No SRE Lessons. One of the unofficial roles I end up fulfilling as a biology lecturer is as a general go-to gal for discussion about sexual health. We don't have formal sex and relationship education (SRE) at the college, as all the students are post-16. We do, however, have two nurse-counsellors and an advisor from Brook. Who visits several times a week. Free condoms are available from the tutors, and periodically free chlamydia tests are offered. So she is i...

Stages Of Succession: Farewell To Coursework
http://www.stagesofsuccession.com/2013/04/farewell-to-coursework.html
Tuesday, 9 April 2013. In just over a month I will send off the last batch of A-level coursework I will ever have to mark (or at least until the specification changes). I can't say I will be sad to see it go. After four years, I shall enjoy having some time to enjoy my Easter holiday, and will be delighted to not go through a large bottle of Gaviscon for the fortnight before the 15th May deadline. Lab work for Unit 6. Now, I've written about the fun of fieldwork. And I've listed the many advantages.

Stages Of Succession: Why I Like Coursework
http://www.stagesofsuccession.com/2011/08/why-i-like-coursework.html
Tuesday, 2 August 2011. Why I Like Coursework. My dear husband, upon reading the title of this post, will with some justification wonder if I have finally gone completely insane. He dealt with an extremely stressed little lecturer. This is triggered by a post in the Torygraph. Write in the third person passive tense using formal, technical language. Construct a proper citation and full reference using the Harvard Referencing System ( Neil's Toolbox. To find useful references by subject. Evaluate whether ...

Sunday, 8 September 2013. Reflecting On Privilege In Education. Yesterday I attended the fantastic researchED 2013. The most frequently-asked question of me by my students is "Why didn't you become a doctor? The second most frequently-asked question is "Why do you want to teach here if you went to Cambridge? And I get that one from students and staff alike. For students, I turn it back to them - "Why wouldn't I? I think you deserve to be taught by highly qualified teachers, don't you? Ah, the old WWW and...

Stages Of Succession: You Don't Scare Me, I Teach In FE #1: Hearts In The Air
http://www.stagesofsuccession.com/2013/02/you-dont-scare-me-i-teach-in-fe-1.html
Wednesday, 20 February 2013. You Don't Scare Me, I Teach In FE #1: Hearts In The Air. My A2 class are an interesting lot (mostly in a good way). They do the " why regress. And it's great to see more of the same. Occasionally, however, they test my patience. Surely not, you cry! How could 17 teenagers and twenty-somethings possibly get on my nerves? Hell yes. Spirits were high and the students were thrilled at the thought of being allowed scalpels (why we haven't had more injuries, I will never know).
