The seventies: My life in Disco
http://the-seventies.blogspot.com/2009/08/my-life-in-disco.html
My life in Disco. In case you're wondering if I enjoyed myself during the Age of Disco, here is some visual proof: I definitely had a right funky good time. This, unfortunately, represented the highmark of my dance moves and skill with the ladies. Something tells me that Ms. 1976 here in the yellow dress went on to have a fabulous. The seventies: Fear and Loathing at the Bauerstown Baseball Association
http://the-seventies.blogspot.com/2009/08/fear-and-loathing-at-bauerstown.html
Fear and Loathing at the Bauerstown Baseball Association. Sports writer and legendary freak H. Unter S. Thompson covers my little league baseball game, 1979. Standing between a 300 pound mescaline-crazed Samoan and this terrified woman, who for all I knew was the wife of the police commissioner, I felt the need to explain the importance of our task. To put her terrified, doughy mind at ease. She needed to be neutralized. 8220;There are infiltrators here. In the bleachers, umpiring the games. CIA&...She s...

Thoughts in the Weeds: Conscience
http://thoughtsintheweeds.blogspot.com/2009/08/conscience.html
August 1, 2009. It happened around lunchtime. We heard the whipping of the blades. First the news copter, then the Medevac. Thirteen-year-old boy on a bike. “A tan- or gold-colored wagon, possibly a Volvo,” we heard later. Hit and Run. For two weeks the story was in the papers and on the evening news with pleas for information. The police searched, following false leads. The boy lay in the hospital. Possible brain damage. Two weeks. I don’t want her likes on the road, regardless of age. I saw on the news...

Thoughts in the Weeds: Jul 25, 2009
http://thoughtsintheweeds.blogspot.com/2009_07_25_archive.html
July 25, 2009. What to write about? Where are all those wonderful ideas, those elegant phrases that run around in my head? Where are they when I need them? Gone, vanished, they’ve abandoned me to the blank page and a blank mind to match. There’s lots of advice on what to do: go for a walk, do a chore, think about something else, take up another topic. Well I’m in no condition to “communicate sacred revelation.” It would be awfully nice if someone else would communicate some revelati...I’m waiting&h...

Thoughts in the Weeds: Jul 14, 2009
http://thoughtsintheweeds.blogspot.com/2009_07_14_archive.html
July 14, 2009. I do a lot of weeding. It doesn’t require much concentration unless you’re skirting poison ivy. My mind wanders. What’s on my mind? Lots of stuff. I could call it “Beyond the Marketing List.”. I guess I’m eccentric — geeky, even. You won’t find much pop culture here. I read, listen to NPR, watch virtually no television, and have a 60-hour-a-week job. From gardening to geopolitics, the mundane to the arcane , I’ll talk about whatever seems interesting on a given day. Oh, and a gallimaufry?

August 1, 2009. Conversation in the Weeds. It may be that if you weed too much, you get a bit goofy. Different weeds take on different personalities and you treat them accordingly. What follows is a conversation with one of my least favorites: Five-leafed Akebia. Good morning, Akebia shoot, I see you’re back. I pulled you out just two weeks ago — maybe a week and a half. Yeah, that hurt. But I got over it. So why do you keep growing? Why do you keep strangling other plants? Why won’t you cooperate? But w...

Thoughts in the Weeds: The Futility of Weeding
http://thoughtsintheweeds.blogspot.com/2009/08/futility-of-weeding.html
August 1, 2009. The Futility of Weeding. 8220;The stateliest building man can raise is the ivy's food at last.” – Charles Dickens, novelist (1812-1870). In other words, it’s the goal and destiny of plants to take over the earth. At least this will keep your blog going into all eternity! Is that from one of his books? I dont know. It showed up on A Word A Day, which just gives the author, not the full citation. Would be interesting to know where it comes from specifically. Eclectic: have worked in public ...

http://thoughtsintheweeds.blogspot.com/2009_07_21_archive.html
July 21, 2009. Music in the Weeds. Usually, what happens to me while I’m weeding is that a tune sets up in my head, something random, something that I’ve heard recently: Emmy Lou Harris’ “Wrecking Ball,” a Bach partita, the song about cocaine with the interesting harmonies that my young cousin’s bluegrass band did. If we’re lucky enough to be able to bring up some Bartók out of our mental playlist, it may help. If not, we’re out of luck. Still haven’t got it? So that’s why we have special musical n...

The seventies: Richard Nixon reviews Star Wars
http://the-seventies.blogspot.com/2009/08/as-many-of-you-know-i-have-been.html
Richard Nixon reviews Star Wars. As many of you know, I have been spending a great deal of time lately in San Clemente writing my memoirs—a task I feel represents the culmination of my long and fruitful career in public life. Dear old Pat always knows best. And I know that's saying. The rebels are also given guidance by a shrunken green man named Yoda with a funny accent who represents the Jewish elite who lend their support to the anti-establishment side. I must admit at first I didn't like the overt le...
