Provoking the Gospel

Welcome to The Provoking the Gospel Project. We are a troupe of players, performers, and interpreters committed to the notion that biblical stories are dramatic texts, engaging texts, provoking texts. We are developing what we call performative midrash, which is a way of exploring texts through deconstructive embodiment of the texts and of the tensions within the texts. We do our work by poking the text and provoking it. We expect the text to poke us back, and to provoke us. Richard W. Swanson.

Provoking the Gospel - Project

http://www.provokingthegospel.com/TheProject.html

We tell stories. That sounds so simple. We embody biblical stories. We listen for suppressed voices and hidden tensions in old, well-known stories. We find that many of these voices and tensions belong to women who have been hidden (and sometimes buried) in these stories we all know so well. The Provoking the Gospel Project. On to graduate work in various fields, including seminary studies, International Conflict Mediation, and Religion and the Performing Arts. The work of the Provoking the Gospel Project.

Because biblical texts are not books, and they are certainly not bulletin inserts. They are stories. Because stories are for telling just like air is for breathing. 2 Why embodying the story? Provoking the Gospel - Performances

http://www.provokingthegospel.com/ThePerformances.html

There are stories in the Bible that are disturbing. Some of them are just odd, some raise awkward questions, and some are so upsetting you sometimes wonder how they got into the Bible in the first place. As important as those stories are, this workshop does not focus on them, at least not to begin with. In this workshop we introduce a new way of exploring biblical stories and demonstrate the value of disturbing stories. Women Who Were Watching: Gender in the Gospels. Christian theology begins with the re...

Saturday, February 13, 2010. Those night crept like never before,. Heavy moon hung over the fathomless forest,. Trees whispering obscured melody of doom. Spitting sins of the damned,. The sky's groaning for reverence,. The prince of darkness sends arrows from above,. Striking those who reflects impiety,. With no forbearance full of vehemence. Sing ti me the hymn of mighty,.
