The Partridge and the Pelican. Questions for book groups. The Things You Do For Love. Is a moving story of families, marriage, lies and life after loss. A delight of a read! A wonderful page-turner of a novel about the complexity of female life, by a new writer who understands it all too well. You can have it all, but only if you’re prepared to pay the price. Love, career, motherhood, art, music something has to go, but which? Or just possibly, all. An unputdownable novel, and so elegantly written! Is re...

In the summer of 1983, Olivia Conafray and her friend Eve found a baby in a telephone box beside a country road in Suffolk. I’m going to phone James, she said. She glanced across at Eve, but Eve didn’t respond. Olivia felt a shriek rising inside her, but already she was thinking of the baby, of protecting it from noise and alarm. Is it all right? Eve’s eyes settled on the baby for a moment, th...

The Partridge and the Pelican. Questions for book groups. What does the title mean? Obviously I’d like you to read the book to find out! But if you’re intrigued by the title and need enticing in, and you don’t mind a bit of a spoiler: the two birds in the title have a symbolic meaning that goes back to the ancient Greek physiologus and later medieval bestiaries (animal morality stories). You can find an account of the pelican, for example, here. Where did the idea for the story come from? We don’t have c...

A Room Of My Own. Tuesday, 30 December 2014. Sublime Screenplay - "Homeland". Chris and I have been "Homeland" fans since the first twisty tense episodes were aired in the UK in 2012. A Room Of My Own. Saturday, 10 January 2015. It runs in the family. Being a busy teacher with 8 children and bills to pay, he never quite found the time. My twin sister (the writer Julia Williams. So it's both sad and wonderful that she was writing in her seventies. Sad because if she'd had money and a room of her own sooner, who knows what she might have achieved? But wonderful, because at the end of her life she was thinking up characters and working hard to make them live on the page. Plug of the Month.

A Room Of My Own. Saturday, 25 October 2014. Nanowrimo - one year later. This time last year, I had just completed "Echo Hall" and was beginning the long (and ongoing) slog of looking for an agent. I knew I needed to get on with my next novel, so I decided to sign up for Nanowrimo. It occurred to me that one of the reasons I've been working so slowly, is that I haven't taken time out to plan properly. So this morning, I got plotting. Though I absolutely loved doing Nanowrimo last year I won't be joining ...

There's Mitchell's fabulous wordplay such as his clever use of "The Fox and Hounds" and a very chilling understanding at the end of what the right sort actually means. Throw in a malevolent dog, a weird mother and son, a creepy house, odd happenings, a hallucinatory atmosphere, a brooding sense of danger and you have a terrific story, that only improves on re-reading. Check me at 4:56 looking at the room ...

Friday, August 27, 2010. Well it's my six month anniversary! I am so happy and giddy.ok well maybe that is an exaggeration.it's only that it has been six months since I have tried this blogging situation. Happy and giddy do not exactly describe my current emotions. I am so glad that I do not have to be defined by my emotions. There is a very dramatic and somewhat odd phrase that has been running through my mind these past several months. Are you ready for it? Belly full of Tears. Saturday, March 6, 2010.
