Leilah Tov: February 2009
http://leilahtov.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 28, 2009. She finally handed me 10 Euros and screamed at me to get out of her store. I left in tears, convinced that the clerk had stolen my money and angry about the fact that the historical bakery in the Jewish ghetto seemed to be nothing more than just another tourist trap in a city famed for its pickpockets. . Ten minutes later, I took out my change purse to by a ticket for the metro. Lo and behold, there was my 20 - I had put it amongst my coins instead of in my billfold! Apparent...

Leilah Tov: Juxtapositions and Jewish Geography
http://leilahtov.blogspot.com/2008/09/juxtapositions-and-jewish-geography.html
Wednesday, September 3, 2008. Juxtapositions and Jewish Geography. These pictures were taken from the Haas Promenade, or Tayelet, overlooking a gorgeous view of Jerusalem. Since it provides such a wonderful panoramic overview, it's typically the first stop made by all tour buses that enter the city. Case in point: I auditioned for the Jerusalem Gilbert and Sullivan Society on Sunday, and was offered the role of Kate in Yeoman of the Guard. In addition to Jewish Geography, there’s apparently also qu...

Leilah Tov: Lather, Rinse, Repent
http://leilahtov.blogspot.com/2008/10/lather-rinse-repent.html
Thursday, October 9, 2008. Lather, Rinse, Repent. They say that you learn best when you're thrown right into the fire, which is exactly what happened when I "accidentally" agreed to a student pulpit for Yom Kippur. I say "accidentally" because when my fellow cantorial students and I received an invitation to spend the High Holidays with the Masorti (aka Conservative) congregation in the small community of Kochav Yair. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Here are the words to the first verse so that you can...

Leilah Tov: August 2015
http://leilahtov.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 31, 2015. Purchased last week on the streets of New York City:. This is the opposite of what happens during the High Holy Days. We may not have the power to change the past, but we can make change in the future - through repentance, prayer, and charity. Sunday, August 30, 2015. How ironic - considering that TLC stands for "The Learning Channel.". Yes, this is the depth of "learning" that is happening on TLC. Perhaps a better name for TLC would be "The Lounging Channel.". Many of these stor...

Leilah Tov: December 2008
http://leilahtov.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Tuesday, December 30, 2008. Here are some photos from the show. Enjoy, and Happy New Year! Tuesday, December 23, 2008. Santa Claus Ain't Coming to Town. Instead, latkes, sufganiot (jelly doughnuts), menorahs, and dreidels are everywhere! As amazing as it is, I must admit that I do kinda sorta miss the Christmas spirit - it feels like the Grinch stole Christmas here! In addition to sufganiot, the shuk also sold menorahs and dreidels of all shapes and sizes. Take note of the outside glass box menorah&#...

Leilah Tov: November 2008
http://leilahtov.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 24, 2008. Bibi, Tzipi, and David Too! As my blog posts get fewer and far between, my experience living in Jerusalem continues to become more enriched each day. Last week I was fortunate enough to attend the closing ceremony of United Jewish Community's General Assembly, which featured appearances by Binyamin Netanyahu (aka Bibi) and Tzipi Livni! I'm performing in an original operetta called "The Keys to the City," written by the director and conductor of "Yeomen." The show is about t...

Leilah Tov: July 2008
http://leilahtov.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Friday, July 25, 2008. I was supposed to go to services tonight at a supposedly "hipster" synagogue downtown meant for "unaffiliated" Jews (name intentionally witheld). Upon doing a little research, I discovered that said synagogue is actually an Orthodox community, complete with mechitza (ie, seperate seating for men and women). Anyway, the moral of the story is that I'm sticking with the familiar and heading off to BJ with Mia. :). Thursday, July 24, 2008. Israel: It's Safe to Come. Lest this become a ...

Leilah Tov: May 2009
http://leilahtov.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, May 31, 2009. You know you've been living in a foreign country too long when you don't realize it's Memorial Day weekend until you log onto Facebook and see your friends' status updates. Of course, Memorial Day weekend for me is never really more than time off from work or school to spend barbecuing, watching fireworks, or hanging out with friends. The ceremony actually had a dual purpose of commemorating both Israeli independence AND IDF memorial day, and there was an almost manic shift between ...

Leilah Tov: Never Forget
http://leilahtov.blogspot.com/2009/04/never-forget.html
Monday, April 20, 2009. My bleak thoughts were soon interrupted by a growing glimmer of light, which gradually got bigger as the exit grew near. As I approached a gorgeous panoramic view of Jerusalem of Gold, I understood and embraced Israel's significance as the Jewish homeland. The centerpiece of the ceremony involved a torch lighting by six Holocaust survivors, who told their stories in a multimedia combination of film, music, and poetry.
