Thoughts from the Grim North: May 2015
http://rainsborough.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Thoughts from the Grim North. Formerly known as Must Labour Die? And leaving this unresolved, we revert to idle thoughts. Friday, 22 May 2015. Good night and good luck. Probably, at least in its current form, if any genuinely progressive movement is to emerge in this country. Should Labour die? Absolutely after such an incompetent campaign. Could Labour die? Thank to those who followed this brief blog which will now close. Good night and good luck. Links to this post. Wednesday, 13 May 2015. The North Lo...

Thoughts from the Grim North: March 2010
http://rainsborough.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Thoughts from the Grim North. Formerly known as Must Labour Die? And leaving this unresolved, we revert to idle thoughts. Tuesday, 9 March 2010. Sleepwalking to political crisis. Is Britain sleepwalking towards a political crisis at the next General Election? As the heat is turned up on what promises to be a very dirty, personalised campaign, it certainly seems so given that none of the leaders of the three main parties seems interested in just how precarious is our political system. Thoughts from the Grim North: Farewell to Welfare Statism or Good Riddance
http://rainsborough.blogspot.com/2015/05/farewell-to-welfare-statism-or-good.html
Thoughts from the Grim North. Formerly known as Must Labour Die? And leaving this unresolved, we revert to idle thoughts. Wednesday, 13 May 2015. Farewell to Welfare Statism or Good Riddance. So what do we make of that then? As for Labour, the real surprise is that they've still got so many MPs. How did these 230-odd bores and chancers and big-mouths get anybody. To vote for them? Or the “hell yes”? Or the stumble off the stage in Leeds? The central project of the forthcoming Tory government will be to c...

Thoughts from the Grim North. Formerly known as Must Labour Die? And leaving this unresolved, we revert to idle thoughts. Wednesday, 29 April 2015. What to do with the EU? What attitude to take? Naturally the EU has attracted hostility in different degrees of intensity, some of it unrelenting, and given it character and practice this should not surprise anybody. Would its breakup, if that were to occur, therefore deserve celebration and applause? Links to this post. Wednesday, 22 April 2015. Further, the...

Dave Elliott: December 2014
http://delliott6.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Monday, December 1, 2014. In my last two posts I looked at the way changes in technology interacted with employment and at how green energy technology might create new jobs. That's part of a wider process of economic change. I want to round off this discussion with some more high kevel thinking, before I get back to my more usual focus of. Looking at what the technological options are. Maybe, for a while. But whether it can allow economic growth to continue unabated for ever is less clear. But there stil...
Dave Elliott: February 2015
http://delliott6.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 1, 2015. All change - as oil gets cheap. Being cut, the energy policy scene is getting increasingly fraught. Keeping OPEC oil production levels high has forced prices down as oil seeks to see off the boom in coal use. That in part has been due to the shale gas boom in the USA- which has been able to export more cheap coal. But these market manipulations are set in the context of climate change. That has had a big impact in Germany. Nevertheless, not everyone likes this trend anti-fossil ...
Dave Elliott: All change: new energy, new institutions
http://delliott6.blogspot.com/2015/05/all-change-new-energy-new-institutions.html
Friday, May 1, 2015. All change: new energy, new institutions. 8216;There needs to be some sort of regulatory overseer with clearly defined boundaries, given to it by, and answerable to, Parliament’. That’s one of the main claims of a discussion paper from iGov, the Exeter University based energy research group:. Http:/ projects.exeter.ac.uk/igov/working-paper-public-value-energy-governance/. 8216;better meets the technical and social needs of the evolving energy system’. They say they favour ‘a bo...
Dave Elliott: January 2015
http://delliott6.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, January 1, 2015. The Big issues: a communications revolution. Growing a peaceful, sustainable Earth through communications’. It’s good to start the New Year on a positive note! And the new revised edition of Gary Alexander’s. It is, as he says in the introduction, like the first edition. And in which all the other issues raised above were at least significantly better, if not fully resolved? What might it be like? What sort of jobs would people do? That’s a view that has been common in &#...
Dave Elliott: June 2015
http://delliott6.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 1, 2015. Do you think there are many people of this kind, say, in England or in France? No; there are few who would be willing to break away from their employers and begin reconstructing the world.’. Joseph Stalin in conversation with H.G Wells in Moscow 1934 First published as a special New Statesman Supplement 27 October 1934. Recycled by NS 18/414. Is this the type of radical commitment that engineers must aim for? What are the practical implications? Thou shalt not use fossil fuels.
Dave Elliott: Nuclear in not the answer to climate change
http://delliott6.blogspot.com/2015/04/nuclear-in-not-answer-to-climate-change.html
Wednesday, April 1, 2015. Nuclear in not the answer to climate change. The land-use claim is familiar enough; but calculations like this often ignore the land use implications of uranium mining, fuel processing and waste disposal. Indeed, Amory Lovins has calculated that, when the fuel nuclear fuel cycle is included, the nuclear option overall may actually use more. Land than a renewable energy system with a similar output:. Dave Elliott: Climate Changes again
http://delliott6.blogspot.com/2015/07/climate-changes-again.html
Thursday, July 2, 2015. It is incontrovertible that the climate is changing, and the cause seems clear- emissions of greenhouse gasses due to human activities including burning fossil fuels. However the scale, nature and pace of the changes, and their likely specific local impacts, are still. But that is not certain. There are problems with this. Will adaptation be enough and will it be cheaper than major mitigation measures? However there is another, arguably more nuanced approach- don't rely just on co...

Dave Elliott: September 2014
http://delliott6.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Saturday, September 13, 2014. There is a fascinating debate over whether long distance High Voltage Direct Current supergrids. Are the right way ahead for energy transmission. In theory they allow variable local supplies. And demands to be balanced across wide geographical areas and are much more efficient, in terms of energy losses over long distance transmission, than. However there are problems. It can get quite technical. At the extreme is the idea of local ‘island generation’, with each ...To shift ...

Thoughts from the Grim North
Thoughts from the Grim North. Formerly known as Must Labour Die? And leaving this unresolved, we revert to idle thoughts. Wednesday, 3 August 2016. The referendum vote in the U.K. to leave the European Union (EU) forms a coda to the rather pessimistic piece in the last issue of The Thinker. Last June, a majority of English (and Welsh) people stubbornly refused to accept the advice of just the same people who had expected to be followed as usual. In a perceptive article in the London Review of Books.

Rainsborough-Scottish Culture
Once upon a time not so long ago. Rainsborough.org is intended to encourage the arts in Scotland and especially in Glasgow. Glasgow is said to have a vibrant art scene, and it does have many venues and a couple of good concert halls, as well as the Theatre Royal, but what it does not have, that many cities do have, is a music and performance center. Glasgow must construct a purpose-built music and theatre center.
The Rainsbow Road
Friday, August 14, 2015. All pretty much the same to me. The lighthouse on its sand spit. Mussel ready for cracking. Insides with gusto. Sometimes it takes 3 or 4 drops, but it works. No leak. So we didn't go back to Sequim. Since then we have been through a couple of thunder storms, including a pretty impressive one a couple of hours ago, and the interior is dry as a bone. So I guess we'll call that problem fixed for now. But we will still cross our fingers every time it rains. Links to this post. The f...
