If this blog piques your interest, check out a couple of excellent sites to which I've made small contributions. You've heard the journalistic adage, follow the money. Perhaps more apt for for those of us in the West these days is, follow the water. That's what ace reporter Emily Green does on Chance of Rain. In doing so, she delves into climate change, pollution, low- water gardening and more. The site also compiles her brilliant LA Times. What's to be done? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Hiking (N. LA).

Rambling LA: March 2012

http://ramblingla.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 16, 2012. Evaluating urban forestry after the recent severe windstorm. From March 20012 issue of Arroyo Montly Magazine. When thousands of trees toppled in last November’s fierce windstorm, it was a reminder that urban trees, those gentle giants, can pack a powerful punch. Pasadena and Altadena are still littered with stumps, uplifted sidewalks and orange cones. The event has prompted soul-searching among arborists and tree lovers over the challenges of sustaining urban forests. For homeown...

Rambling LA: October 2010

Sunday, October 24, 2010. I've been away from this blog a really long time. I do have an excuse. A mountain lion ate my lap top. Okay, seriously, I was single mom all this summer. Then I was drowning in real work (as opposed to this blog, which is just me making unpaid work for myself). Anyway, among the projects keeping me from chattering is a new mini-gig contributing to ClimateWatch. My first post for the ClimateWatch blog is a Q&A with David Nahai. Michael Gibson of Trout Unlimited told us lower stre...

Dakota and I both find most store-bought granolas way too sweet and full of "extra" flavors. So, my goal was to make granola that was simple, healthy and tasty. Dakota made some simple wood A-frame tents, and I attached flat sheets with sewed-on elastic loops. They turned out very cute, although I admit that the kids spent most of their time playing inside Dakota's old blue boy scout tent. This blo...

Does anyone have any idea what kind of insect makes this chrysalis? I found it growing on a dead branch of a Copper Canyon Daisy bush a couple of weeks ago. It's a little bigger than a quarter in size and kind of golden brown and scaly.

Ramshackle Solid: Beeless

http://www.ramshacklesolid.com/2013/01/beeless.html

Thursday, January 31, 2013. Two weeks ago, we noticed usual activity surrounding the bees. When we went to investigate, we saw our hive was under attack by robber bees. Eric reduced the entrance to the hive. I covered the hive in a sheet. But our measures we no match for the robber bees. Within a day, our six box high hive was an empty shell of the thriving bee metropolis it once was. Posted by Julia Posey. January 31, 2013 at 10:52 PM. I hope you find a new swarm soon. Ramshackle Solid: Sesame Flax Bars

http://www.ramshacklesolid.com/2009/02/sesame-flax-bars.html

Friday, February 20, 2009. I love the idea of quick nutrition with good food. Real food. And a food that can hold up for awhile knocking around in my purse while out and about helps. Bananas, for instance, don't pass the purse test. Enter the power bar. Thanks to our friend Phoenix's vision, we've been making quite a few power bars in our house as of late. I came up with this recipe as a variation on a theme. Sesame Flax Bar (in homage to the delicious Bumble Bar. 1 cup flax seed. 2 cups sesame seeds.

Ramblings of an armchair politician. Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Reaching men for Jesus isn’t only a dream of mine…. Reaching women is equally important! However, we must work with what we’ve been given, and God has given me a burning passion to, a) see men saved, b) see these men walking consistently with the Lord and being the husband, father, brother and friend that God designed them to be. Wednesday, December 21, 2016. I shouldn't be doing this right now. It has been one month now since a vicious, relentless virus hit me, and I have not felt good since. Sinus pressure, choking on phlegm, hacking uncontrollably, headache, blah. Christmas is four days away. I managed to get the Christmas tree up and listlessly threw a few ornaments its way. I put up the stockings. That may be it for decorating this year. I may only bake one kind of cookie. Being sick simplifies life. Then I began teaching my...
