Ramblings of a First-Year Teacher. Wednesday, September 1, 2010. Today was not a good day. I know I'll have plenty of those in my teaching career, but I didn't expect to have one so early on. I'm really struggling to squash the notion of being "the teacher they like" in favor of being "the teacher they need." I know what kind of teacher they like. They like the funny guy- the guy who has no rules, no seating chart, and no intention of challenging them. Sun = makes me happy. They exist. I know that now.

I've taught one week and one day of lessons, and I'm happy to say that it's exactly what I hoped it'd be like. I've had some frustrating moments and some funny moments. How to lay ceramic tile and grout,. How to install hardwood floors. How to paint and stain everything! How to remove, plane, sand and repaint trim. Insert a gas log fireplace. How to lay sod, plant trees, bushes, a garden, mow, cut and trim. HOWEVER I can not sew, fold laundry nicely, walk in heels, style hair, or make a pretty bow.
