Welcome to Rame Gig Club. We were formed in 1992 to revive and promote the sport of competitive rowing on the Cornish Rame Peninsula. In doing so we provide a healthy pastime for members of our community. Our Gig Club went through a major refurbishment in 2011 so even if you are not a rower why not join us to enjoy the social events or use our fitness suite to get fit. Pilot Gig racing had started in Newquay in 1962 and, by 1992 there were over 40 gigs racing for 20 Cornish clubs. There are now over 150 pilot gigs in existence spread through out Cornwall and beyound. Gig Racing is the fasting growing sport in the South West and helps to preserve an important part of our Cornish Heritage. The sport caters for all ages. There are numerous Regattas held throughout the summer in which the club competes. These attract large crowds and are spectacular.

The Club owns 3 Gigs. Our first Gig, the Spirit of Rame was built by Jimmy Donne and Son of St Budeaux, Plymouth. The second Gig the Minnadhu, is probably our fastest boat, was built by Jim Currah in 1994. Finally, Jim and his son Dave Currah built our newest boat, the Penlee Point, in 2004. Regettas are held at the weekends in the Summer although we row all year around both to train or simply to enjoy being on the water. If you fancy a try at rowing come along to a novice night and have a go!

The refurbishment of our Gig Shed was a massive undertaking for a small Community as can be witnessed from our Gallery pages. As well as promoting the sport of Gig Rowing, the Governing Body being the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA), our dream was to provide a fitness suite to promote the health and well being of the community, a meeting area to improve the social cohesion , refurbish an important community assett and revive and promote our heritage.
