Reading...: Hooked

http://readingmiddlemarch.blogspot.com/2006/11/hooked.html

Previously read: The Red and the Black, War and Peace, Middlemarch. Wednesday, November 08, 2006. Stendhal is light on the irony at the start of things, but then I came upon this in Ch. 5 and could not keep from laughing:. With his fiery nature Julien had one of those astonishing memories so often found in foolish people. Ok, I'm definitely in for the long-haul- this is going to be fun. (The epigraph by "ENNIUS" made me smile as well.). PS I'm reading the Moncrieff e-text since I have no bookstore access.

Reading...: What to make of Julien?

http://readingmiddlemarch.blogspot.com/2006/11/what-to-make-of-julien.html

Previously read: The Red and the Black, War and Peace, Middlemarch. Tuesday, November 14, 2006. What to make of Julien? I mentioned previously in passing that Julien, in the opening chapters anyway, reminded me a little of Pierre in. Obviously, I still have. I sympathize with these naifs. They're underdogs; I want to root for them. Except, a few more chapters along, I don't really like Julien anymore. I still feel a little sorry for him, but I don't understand him. He feels toward Mme de Rênal? As I unde...

Reading...: The end of Tolstoy

http://readingmiddlemarch.blogspot.com/2006/09/end-of-tolstoy.html

Previously read: The Red and the Black, War and Peace, Middlemarch. Wednesday, September 27, 2006. The end of Tolstoy. We may as well call it a day and consider discussion on. I'm still thinking about. I'm just having great difficulty saying anything about it. I've determined that perhaps it lends itself better to introspection; any discussion of it (that isn't in the flesh and involving music and vodka) is bound to be superficial. Years in the making! It's considered to be the most faithful adaptation.

Reading...: "The cage less gay"

http://readingmiddlemarch.blogspot.com/2006/11/cage-less-gay.html

Previously read: The Red and the Black, War and Peace, Middlemarch. Monday, November 06, 2006. The cage less gay". The little town of Verrières might be one of the prettiest in all Franche-Comté.". The town of Verrières is fictional, but its geography and description suggests Besançon. It's not a stand-in, however, as characters refer to this other town in their comings and goings (as a centre of learning and of fashion, or at least shopping). The trees are "like the most vulgar of garden vegetables.".

Reading...: May 2006

http://readingmiddlemarch.blogspot.com/2006_05_01_archive.html

Previously read: The Red and the Black, War and Peace, Middlemarch. Tuesday, May 23, 2006. A couple weeks ago we watched the first half of the 1994 BBC adaptation of Middlemarch, one episode per night (it's packaged in 6 episodes). Episode 3 ended with the death of Casaubon, which in print occurs at the end of chapter 48 (of 86). My impressions, briefly, while I still have them:. Robert Hardy as Mr Brooke is hilarious. (Hardy plays Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter movies.). We never hear about Laure: ...

Canon Fodder: January 2007

http://mapletree7.blogspot.com/2007_01_01_archive.html

The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells. The War of the Worlds. By H G. Wells is one of the first science fiction books. Aliens from Mars invade suburban England riding scary tripod machines. The scariest thing about this book is that it was written in 1898, 16 years before World War I, yet it contains realistic depictions of the use of poison gas. What technology of today would be a good choice for bringing down invading aliens? And in twenty years it will seem run-of-the-mill. Saturday, January 27, 2007.
