Reading Shakespeare's Plays: March 2014

http://readingshakespearesplays.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Monday, March 31, 2014. A Shakespeare Lecture – Part 2. Marlow was apparently the theater rock star in his day, well-regarded and idolized because of his popular and oft-performed plays. Like Shakespeare, he took what was before him and transformed it into something new and better. For example, he either invented or popularized blank verse. Said, not quite as flexible. You don’t see the range and variety of voice in his works (for example, Marlowe’s lead character in his Jew of Malta. The other night spo...

Sunday, January 19, 2014. Rape, murder, cannibalism, mutilation, decapitation… Titus Andronicus. Is one of the stupidest and most uninspired plays ever written, a play in which it is incredible that Shakespeare had any hand at all.". Apparently this play is so bad that for centuries everyone refused to believe that Shakespeare wrote it, a theory that has some merit but has been pretty much debunked in modern times (the thinking now is that he only wrote part of it, which also strikes me as apologetic).

Tuesday, June 24, 2014. One of the specific things we discussed along these lines was the influence of Hermetic magic. And the hermetic worldview in Shakespeare’s day. Hermeticism is a belief system based on the ancient writings of Hermes Trismegistus. I know, great name, right? So, what does this have to do with Shakespeare? Or an all-powerful magic book ( The Tempest. Thursday, June 19, 2014. A colleague recently recommended the graphic novel Kill Shakespeare. Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Spoken by Prospero...

Reading Shakespeare Just for Fun

http://www.michaeljroueche.com/reading-shakespeare

Second Globe Theatre built in 1614, after the first one burned down during a performance of Henry VIII. To celebrate William Shakespeare. S 450th birthday, I read all of his works and blogged about and rated each play. I also posted my thoughts after reading all of Shakespeare. My blogs are divided into Tragedies, Histories and Comedies, and each is listed within those categories by Bard Rating. The system is based on how much I personally enjoyed the play compared to other Shakespeare plays. I will not ...
