“Preludes” by T.S. Eliot | Reading to Ransom
https://readingtoransom.wordpress.com/2012/05/01/preludes
8220;Preludes” by T.S. Eliot. The winter evening settles down. With smell of steaks in passageways. The burnt-out ends of smoky days. And now a gusty shower wraps. Of withered leaves about your feet. And newspapers from vacant lots;. On broken blinds and chimney-pots,. And at the corner of the street. A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps. And then the lighting of the lamps. The morning comes to consciousness. Of faint stale smells of beer. From the sawdust-trampled street. With the other masquerades.
July | 2012 | Reading to Ransom
https://readingtoransom.wordpress.com/2012/07
Month: July, 2012. July 23, 2012. 8220;The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop. I caught a tremendous fish. And held him beside the boat. Half out of water, with my hook. Fast in a corner of his mouth. He didn’t fight. He hadn’t fought at all. He hung a grunting weight,. And homely. Here and there. His brown skin hung in strips. Like ancient wallpaper,. And its pattern of darker brown. Shapes like full-blown roses. Stained and lost through age. He was speckled and barnacles,. Fine rosettes of lime,. And then I saw.
“A Confession” by C.S. Lewis | Reading to Ransom
https://readingtoransom.wordpress.com/2012/06/19/a-confession-by-c-s-lewis
8220;A Confession” by C.S. Lewis. I am so coarse, the things the poets see. Are obstinately invisible to me. For twenty years I’ve stared my level best. To see if evening any evening would suggest. A patient etherized upon a table;. In vain. I simply wasn’t able. To me each evening looked far more. Like the departure from a silent, yet a crowded, shore. Of a ship whose freight was everything, leaving behind. Gracefully, finally, without farewells, marooned mankind. Red dawn behind a hedgerow in the east.

Month: May, 2012. May 1, 2012. 8220;La Figlia Che Piange” by T.S. Eliot. Stand on the highest pavement of the stair —. Lean on a garden urn —. Weave, weave the sunlight in your hair —. Clasp your flowers to you with a pained surprise —. Fling them to the ground and turn. With a fugitive resentment in your eyes:. But weave, weave the sunlight in your hair. So I would have had him leave,. So I would have had her stand and grieve,. So he would have left. As the soul leaves the body torn and bruised,. With a...
“God’s Grandeur” by G.M. Hopkins | Reading to Ransom
https://readingtoransom.wordpress.com/2012/07/23/gods-grandeur-by-g-m-hopkins
8220;God’s Grandeur” by G.M. Hopkins. The world is charged with the grandeur of God. It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;. It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil. Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod? Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;. And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;. And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil. Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod. And for all this, nature is never spent;. July 23, 2012.

Yosemite | poesy.
https://joshleland.wordpress.com/2012/07/23/yosemite
July 23, 2012, 5:49 pm. I clung like an ant to the tip of the world,. Breathless and dizzy; gasping and reeling–. The spinning sky over me carelessly staring–. The vertigo pulling up falling of feeling. And my voice cried out through the crookedly canyons,. Carried faintly but far on the wings of the wind:. 8220;I would we embrace, but I cannot now reach you–. For the ways are all bent, and I cannot get in.”. But an echo returned from the vastness, the chasm,. Whispered in tongues of the broken-in-heart:.

July 23, 2012, 6:26 pm. These rolling green mountains hold. That still haunt these old hills,. Doomed to live the past eternally. And these familiar winding, wooded roads through which I steer. Are filled with phantoms,. Indelible beings that desperately cling–. Like an unconscious fear of some yet unknown thing–. And only grow poignant with the passing of years. I am moved by these. Memories–these ghosts–. Though to where, or to what,. I cannot well say;. It is not a sadness, nor even regret,.

For My Brother Jesse–Upon Musing on the Memories Most Special to Me. June 23, 2010, 5:38 pm. Filed under: other poems. I can remember floating in the cold waters of Australia,. On my back, shaking with laughter. But not too hard, or the water would go up my nose). There, at that particular time, in that particular space,. In that wonderfully blue, shining place;. I looked up at the sky. And experienced being perfectly happy. If only for a brief amount of time. And I found that it’s true:. For a moment th...

It would be nice to die while sleeping. September 26, 2010, 11:05 pm. Filed under: other poems. It would be nice to die while sleeping,. To slip silent into that familiar land of dreaming,. And finally cross over to that distant shore,. Just one heartbeat away from this foggy land of seeming. It would be nice to die while sleeping,. And do the deed I’ve done scores of times before;. Maybe I could be courageous, and greet it with a smile,. And morning wouldn’t find me waking stiff and sore.

October 1, 2012, 2:17 am. Like is an important word. And although it is much abused. And greatly over-misused,. That we simply cannot do without it. Like has so many meanings. That it may appear to mean nothing–. Though that would be like saying. That because love is as slippery a word as a fish. It is therefore only whitewash. And vainly wishful thinking–. Just a dream of lifeboats, and vests,. And the strong, dry shore. On a ship that is slowly, inevitably, sinking. Like is an important word,. We need ...

December 25, 2010, 4:37 pm. My son is still small, his skin thin and warm,. And his flashing dark eyes dart all around;. His tiny arms flail as he cranes his frail neck. At all these bright lights, and all these strange sounds. Though older than him, I am still but a child,. Just as helpless and weak, and fragile as he,. And just as dependent on a wiser one’s help. For I understand not the world that I see. Blog at WordPress.com.

January 4, 2012, 11:43 pm. Filed under: other poems. In my living room there is a fan with three lights. And a small piece of porcelain hangs from a chain in the middle,. Swaying slightly, glossy blue and white. I poke it with my finger, and under it we stand–. My son in my arms, head tilted back,. Eagerly reaching with delicate hands. He cannot yet speak,. But he makes this particular noise when he sees. That dangling beauty, always so just out of reach;. A joyful wheezing mixed with parts mourning.

June 28, 2011, 10:19 pm. Filed under: other poems. Its taken me quite some time to understand. The outrageousness of the doctrine:. Fully God and fully man. But I suppose some mystery is to be expected. With one who claimed to be God ‘come man. To be by both rejected. The anguish of the dying God’s humanity. Bled through his tormented final cry:. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? I could not love God with all my heart. Did he not understand and know. My saddest and most lonely parts. A father...

Whose thoughts are these? September 19, 2011, 3:32 am. Filed under: other poems. When I retire at night to put the pen to page. And push its leaking point deliberately,. I later find the markings that my hand has made. And recognize them, as a newly found forgotten memory,. Or a newborn baby, birthed prematurely. And I wonder: whose thoughts are these? I know myself far better than I know,. I understand much more than I really care to see;. For hidden in my scrawling notes. Blog at WordPress.com.

Reading to Reid
Monday, January 21, 2008. While I did Reid's hair this morning (I can read and braid at the same time), I read Valentine by Carol Carrick. This story about a little girl who helps care for a newborn lamb on Valentine's Day offers a concrete example of love in action without being moralistic in the least. At gymnastics, after discussing why books would be at gymnastics, we read:. Winnie the Pooh and His Friends Blackberry Surprise. Based on A.A. Milne. Saturday, January 19, 2008. When we're at Melissa's, ...
