Mrs Wigglesworth's Blog. On: October 1, 2010. This week we continued to talk about different community helpers such as truck drivers, doctors, librarians, teachers, and photographers. We had fun painting with truck wheels, drawing fire with chalk and putting it out squirt bottles. We enjoyed our visit with Miss Anna, a librarian from the Darien Public Library. A 2012 study by the Brookings Institution’s Social Genome Project noted that fewer than half of poor children are ready for school at age 5, compared to 75% of their peers not from poverty. Research indicates that upon entering kindergarten, children from poverty are as much as two years behind their peers who are not from poverty. 34% of children entering kindergarten lack the basic language skills needed to learn to read.
