Returning to Chess: July 2013

http://www.returningtochess.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 16, 2013. FIDE Grand Prix Standings - Post Beijing. Things have clarified significantly after Mamedyarov's clear win in Beijing. He and Topalov are the leaders in the clubhouse. Vasselin has clinched a birth in the Candidates tournament with his 410 points. He can't be caught and wins the Grand Prix series. I'll be honest - with the time differences between Beijing and the west coast of the US, it was very hard for me to keep up with this tournament. It felt like an afterthought. Simple tem...

Returning to Chess: August 2012

http://www.returningtochess.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Wednesday, August 1, 2012. I haven't written much on here lately, that's for sure. I've now played in three OTB tournaments since returning to chess, with 12 total games. I'm at 4 -6 = 2, and I've picked up thirty points on my rating. The average rating of the six players I've lost to is (post-event) is 1749, the average of those I've beaten is 1043, and my average draw is 1255. This fits, given my current rating is 1275. I'm through the fifth lesson in the 1. The books I'm currently reading are: A Feroc...

Returning to Chess: July 2012

http://www.returningtochess.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Tuesday, July 3, 2012. Just picked up the new Mastering Opening Strategy by Johan Hellsten. Judging by the first half of the first chapter, it's quite good. One thing it has, in the back, is a section on building an opening repertoire. In that section are two tables which I will take the liberty of reproducing here. If you like this - go buy the book. It covers what you need to know about the openings - HOW to conduct them, not just memorizing a crapload of variations. Benoni, Pirc, Closed Spanish. Okay,...

Returning to Chess: February 2013

http://www.returningtochess.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Yes, I know it's been a while since I posted. More on that in a bit. In the meantime, here's some endgame rules to keep in mind. (B or F indicates whether the rule came from Ruben Fine or Pal Benko). Think about the endgame in the middlegame. (B). Exchanges. Someone gets the better deal. (B). The King is a strong piece. Use it. (F). If you are a pawn or two ahead, exchange pieces. (F). If you are behind, exchange pawns, not pieces. (F). Not all rook endings are drawn. (B).

Returning to Chess: April 2012

http://www.returningtochess.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Saturday, April 28, 2012. Back home from my tournament, and I am wiped out. Four games, G/60. Coming in, my rating (based on 20 yr old results) was 11245. My results were:. 1: loss as white vs. a 1900 player. Blundered a piece for a pawn in an opening trap, and succumbed to a withering attack down the center. 3: draw as black vs. a 1500 player. Tight rook pawn endgame. I think he missed a win - still need to analyze it. I feel the best about this particular game out of the four. Friday, April 27, 2012.

A blog for the lonely..........

A blog for the lonely. A place where my "strange" thoughts can live.and roam free. A blog by Dimitris D. Wednesday, October 31, 2012. Stop, turn around, smile back to your past and walk backwards.". I knew you'd come." The man's face was shining. He was sitting comfortably on that park bench, looking carefree. Hi smile was confident. He looked younger than he really was. He was in his mid forties, but nothing on his appearance revealed it. He seemed serene. Why can't you believe it's true? The man change...
