Coffee and Kebabs: Top Cat, the most effectual...
http://coffeeandkebabs.blogspot.com/2011/01/top-cat-most-effectual.html
Wednesday, 19 January 2011. Top Cat, the most effectual. Wherever you go in Didim. It's hard to get away from dogs. Turkish people seem to love them, but unfortunately there is a major problem here with street dogs. They are everywhere, often choosing the middle of the road to lie down and have a snooze, creating traffic chaos. They generally look well fed, so they must make a pretty good living among the the bars and cafés of downtown Altinkum. Right out of your mind. Meanwhile, the electrician returned...

Coffee and Kebabs: January 2011
http://coffeeandkebabs.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 25 January 2011. It was a dark and stormy night. We've almost started to get used to the thunderstorm. I use the singular quite deliberately, as it does feel as if we've been having the same storm continuously since Saturday. Last night was particularly impressive. It was pretty spectacular,. And traffic signals are powered separately, in a Turkish powercut everything goes off. I can only imagine the traffic chaos that this must cause. Now here's a funny thing. Here it's not rigorously enforced&...

Coffee and Kebabs: Last day in the UK
http://coffeeandkebabs.blogspot.com/2011/01/last-day-in-uk.html
Monday, 10 January 2011. Last day in the UK. Well it's finally here - all the planning and preparation over the last few month has been leading up to this moment - tomorrow we fly out of the UK. To start our year of travel. It's been a stressful couple of days. As well as packing up all our remaining possessions (thankfully not too many courtesy of the 100 Item Challange. This time tomorrow we'll be en-route to Istanbul. Before taking a local flight to Bodrum. Then a taxi to Altinkum. What is a weekend?

Coffee and Kebabs: He used to give me roses, I wish he could again...
http://coffeeandkebabs.blogspot.com/2011/01/he-used-to-give-me-roses-i-wish-he.html
Saturday, 15 January 2011. He used to give me roses, I wish he could again. Wednesday 12th January 2011. Realising that we couldn't have a cup of tea due to our accidental purchase of ayran (which is Turkish for buttermilk and though tasty ice cold in a glass, is quite vile in tea) instead of süt (fresh milk) we decided to go out and forage for food. We were also due to pay a visit to the rental agent to pay the rent (and have a stern word). The walk from into Altinkum. We were rather hungry by this time...

Coffee and Kebabs: A Packed Couple of Days
http://coffeeandkebabs.blogspot.com/2011/01/packed-couple-of-days.html
Wednesday, 5 January 2011. A Packed Couple of Days. We're just back from a hectic couple of days in London. We were combining business with pleasure, as it's my birthday at the weekend and I was treated to a night out at the theatre seeing Priscilla The Musical. Which was wonderful. We also took the opportunity to meet up with old friends before heading off for ten months in Turkey. If all goes according to plan then we'll be doing quite a bit of traveling over the next year. Coffee and Kebabs: Working like Scottish housewives on New Years Eve
http://coffeeandkebabs.blogspot.com/2011/01/working-like-scottish-housewives-on-new.html
Sunday, 16 January 2011. Working like Scottish housewives on New Years Eve. We woke up at 10am, Turkish time, which meant that we'd had 10 hours sleep on top of the 5 hour “power nap” of the previous afternoon. We must have needed it, that's all I can say. This morning we were anticipating the arrival of Mr Internet and the cleaning collective, but first we had a continental breakfast (bread and cheese, a banana, and a cup of tea). Was soon hauled back onto the roof. And with a great fanfare absolutely n...

Coffee and Kebabs: I've Got The Power (Cut)
http://coffeeandkebabs.blogspot.com/2011/01/ive-got-power-cut.html
Tuesday, 18 January 2011. I've Got The Power (Cut). Yesterday we had three power cuts. The second power cut was more noticeable, as it occurred when it was dark. I was preparing the mushrooms for the fritatta I was planning for supper (and Jonathan was admiring Jennifer Love Hewitt. Astonishing range of pouts and head-tosses in ' Ghost Whisperer. Even after switching the grill off, the power refused to come back on. Through trial and error we identified the circuit that was faulty – the circuit...So we'v...

Coffee and Kebabs: Thunder and Lighting (you'd better knock on wood)
http://coffeeandkebabs.blogspot.com/2011/01/thunder-and-lighting-youd-better-knock.html
Sunday, 23 January 2011. Thunder and Lighting (you'd better knock on wood). This morning we woke up to a terrific thunderstorm. A Shakespearian. Storm, wild and raging. It started in the early hours and crashed and boomed for an age. The muezzin set up in competition when the time for prayer came, but his amplified cries were barely audible over the hissing white noise of rain. Hopefully the minarets of his mosque were protected from lightning with more than prayer. It is an amazing spectacle. Stall ...
