Uptown and to the right: August 2010
http://drbx.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Uptown and to the right. On my way to tenure as a professor in New York's northernmost borough. Monday, August 30, 2010. Right now I am thinking I will head out shortly from this ridiculously short day in the office, because there's no A/C in my office and it's going to 95 today. (Talk about expediency with work orders, egh? I did much of what I wanted to do anyway, so I figure I could go home, get some lunch, and work on my class while in my air conditioned apartment. Friday, August 27, 2010. So the mov...

Uptown and to the right: Worth the money?
http://drbx.blogspot.com/2011/05/worth-money.html
Uptown and to the right. On my way to tenure as a professor in New York's northernmost borough. Monday, May 16, 2011. There are regularly articles about whether or not college is "worth the cost." That is, given the soaring cost of college tuition, do you get your money's worth? There is sometimes an attitude that I have noticed both here and at other institutions (sometimes even among graduate students who are not paying at all, but instead being paid. To go to school! The degree you have.

My Plot in Life: How to Celebrate Bed Rest
http://getyourownplot.blogspot.com/2010/03/how-to-celebrate-bed-rest.html
My Plot in Life. Tuesday, March 30, 2010. How to Celebrate Bed Rest. Our neighbors, John, Deb and Annelise, are expecting identical twin girls sometime real soon. Deb is currently on bed rest. Steve and I decided to celebrate with a cookie decorating party. This was done with the intention of giving John and Deb a break from their parenting duties for a couple of hours. It is possible that those duties where made more difficult after attendence at the party. April 1, 2010 at 6:11 PM. Children of a Lesser...

I basically told him that he shouldn't drop the current major just yet, since all of the classes he could take in the fall would work for all degrees he's considering, and may allow him to change his mind. Children of a Lesser Dog. Tuesday, March 29, 2011. I know that death is part of life, and that Jake needed to leave this world so that he wouldn't have to suffer. I also know that Jake was one of the best things that has happened to us. We will love him forever.that fat little one-ear-up-one-ear-down, cat-hating champion. LOVE HIM! Friday, March 4, 2011. Uptown and to the right: December 2010
http://drbx.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Uptown and to the right. On my way to tenure as a professor in New York's northernmost borough. Thursday, December 16, 2010. Not here to be liked. Another student made me kind of want to cry, as he looked like he was about to when he came in saying that he had no clue how to do any of the problems. He was wondering what his grade was, and quite honestly he isn't the best in the class but he does pretty well. But he looked like he was going to burst into tears so I felt really terrible. Chilly in two ways.

Uptown and to the right. On my way to tenure as a professor in New York's northernmost borough. Wednesday, January 26, 2011. The interesting thing about being a new faculty member is how much everyone else seems to not notice the little things that are rather, well, often embarrassing. Some of these things seem considerably unimportant to faculty but when seen through the eyes of the students, they can lead to problems. Old, an update of the lab manual will make it all that more appealing. So I think we ...
